This Writer of Romances is a Working Mom

This feature was created by Ysabel S. Schuld, published poet and writer based in Portland, Oregon, USA.

Lynn during a break from work.

Lynn [ Cymbeline Refalda-Villamin ] writes erotic love stories for the Web, parenting articles for a family magazine, and distributes a self-published writing activity book that seeks to unlock the creative spirit of young people aged 13 to 17 years. Working full time as a supervising science research specialist in a government agency, Lynn is also mother to six children and wife to a very progressive, modern man-- Eliseo, who is a stay-home-father for seven years now and has never regretted every single day of it. They live in Golden City at Salawag, Dasmarinas, Cavite, Philippines.

Living virtually

The nature of her work at the Science and Technology Information Institute (STII), one of the 20 agencies under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), makes her a typical inhabitant of the cyber world by day. Virtual reality is as much a part of her system as putting toddlers to sleep, bonding with teenaged children, menu planning, laundry chores, and washing the dishes. Her husband takes charge of the marketing and cooking department.

Lynn begins work as early as 6:00 in the morning. Logs in to Yahoo and checks her mails, answers correspondences, reads the online Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star and New York Times, and embarks on data search, discovery, and retrieval for her projects. Takes coffee break at nine and a late lunch at about 2 pm. Her work involves mainly the transformation of scientific and technological data into information packages understandable to the layman, the youth, the entrepreneurs, and the faceless general public / science enthusiasts out there-- whether on the Web or in schools and homes, on the streets, market places, corporate board rooms and the halls of the senate and congress. The end-products consist of e-books and digital contents for their Web site.

She provides content for the in-house ebooks, as well as e-stories for kids-- all these on the official Web site of STII, the InfoWeb <http://www.stii.dost.gov.ph>.

Private Passions

In between her official duties, Lynn manages to pursue her passions-- writing about parenting and marriage for a family magazine, promoting her self-published writing activity book for kids, and expanding her professional territory by going out of her safe borders to venture into writing of erotic romances.

"I sort of identify myself with the French erotic writer, Anais Nin. She was a Piscean, just like me. She is very dual, as symbolized by the Pisces zodiac sign, those of fishes swimming in opposite directions. But for me, they represent a unified spiritual-sensual whole. Nin used to say she set people on fire because she was herself on fire. She was very intense and prolific. She was born in February 1903 and died of cancer in 1977."

What erotic writings has she done, so far?

"I used to maintain a Web site, BibleRomance.info where I wrote stories of love and passion from the old testament dressed in modern clothes. The viewpoint is very 20th century. Unfortunately, my Web publisher decided he could no longer maintain the site, together with 900 others, for free. He sold the domains to writers, but I was not in a position to buy.

"I have written the stories of David and Bathsheba, Samson and Delilah, Amnon and Tamar, and Jesus and Magdalene. I've published also a feature about the loving attraction between the human and the divine, where God is likened to a relentless lover who pursues the unfaithful beloved-- us, humanity-- running after strange lovers and forgetting her true husband. God never gives up and allures us, leading us to the desert where He speaks to our heart, enticing us to come back."

At present, Lynn has a work-in-progress, a novel tentatively titled Love on the Web or The Tryst, wherein the lovers are metaphors for loves human and divine. "Longing for love is actually a longing for God," says Lynn.

Is your novel going to be erotic?

"Yes, it is erotic. Sex has always been used to dramatize the fiercest of passions. In the biblical times, the scriptures referred to whoredom and harlotry to refer to the activities of a people who were unfaithful to Yaweh. But in the "Song of Songs" married love is exalted to the level of almost divine love. My novel will have descriptions of the love act between man and woman in very tender and lyrical prose."

When will you publish it?

"Hopefully before the year-end. I will publish it on the Web and will have also a print version."

Seeking to unlock the creative writing ability of the Filipino youth

But Lynn's greatest passion right now revolves around the promotion and distribution of her book, Creative Expressions.

"I was excited when I was writing this book. I am as excited now when I am working to have it reached the farthest areas in the country including Basco in Batanes, Sagada in Baguio, Guimaras in Iloilo, Malaybalay in Bukidnon, everywhere where there exists the digital divide…"

Creative Expressions is a 140-page activity book intended for beginning writers aged 13-17 years. Consists of writing guides, all-original reading selections, and writing prompts to encourage "free writing" among beginners without being self-conscious of grammatical rules or scared of committing mistakes.

How many copies has Lynn distributed so far?

"Only a couple of hundreds, mainly complimentaries and donations to friends and a book foundation. I wish I can give away all the 1000 copies I still have now for free. I am seeking endorsement from a book foundation. I am working to have them write letters to corporate CEOs endorsing purchase of my book for donation to the book foundation, which in turn will distribute copies for free to public schools nationwide. The foundation chairperson has agreed in principle and found my book to be worthy, but the foundation staff are taking quite long in sending the letters. I wish they would send out the letters soon because there are many corporate chairmen and presidents who want to get involved in worthy projects and are willing to share corporate profits for worthy endeavours."

A recent Golden Web Awards recipient for her experimental sites, BibleRomance.info and StayAtHomeFathers.com, Lynn said her greatest reward would be to see young people writing freely, expressing their thoughts and feelings on paper and publishing them.in print as well as digital form. She has already conceptualized The Young Writers' Magazine, which will be an offshoot of Creative Expressions if and when the public schools students begin to use the writing activity book, if and when some kind and generous corporate CEO is inspired enough to share Lynn's dream and purchase copies of her book to give away to the young writers.

"The gift of writing can be our greatest legacy to our youth. Writing gives them a sense of accomplishment and self esteem, which they need in their growing-up years, " says Lynn.
