I'm working on a new letterboxing project that I am hoping everyone in the community can latch on to. It's currently called SWEEP until I can think of anything better.
Well why shouldn't there be? Geocachers have a project called CITO (Cache In, Trash Out.). A Wal-Mart sized plastic grocery bag is stuffed into a 35mm film canister (it does fit, Ive done it myself) and labeled as a CITO container. When a cacher finds one, he removes the bag and takes the canister with him. On the way back from the cache, any litter found is collected and then disposed of properly later on. The canister is then refilled and left in the next cache.
Sound familiar? If we just left canisters in our boxes, many people would just ignore them, but if it had a stamp and logbook attached, it would be a hitchhiker! One element of SWEEP will be a Trash Collecting Hitchhiker (TCH). The bonus of an extra F count would cause more people to take it, and the additional P count would have people producing more. This all adds up to more trash being eliminated! If youre going to make a HH anyway, why not add a baggie to it? One method for making one would be attaching two film canisters end to end. The bag goes in one end and a stamp and small logbook goes in the other. Here's a picture of a completed TCH and an exploded view of it's contents:

But why stop there? SWEEP activities could be added to gatherings and events. The person with the most trash collected, wins a prize or something. SWEEPing could be a reason for a gathering.
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please, please, please add them. If you have a better anachronism than SWEEP or TCH, let me know.
