Filming Mystery on the High Seas

Mystery On The High Seas is an ABC TV special that was broken down into 2 half-hour videos in The Adventures Of Mary-Kate and Ashley video series. I was in The Case Of The Mystery Cruise part, which has the Trenchcoat twins on a cruise ship, tracking down the theif of their father's computer.

Mostly as a result of being in the right place at the right time, I got to be an extra in several scenes.

The first scene I shot was the scene where the girls are handing out business cards on the ship. Mary-Kate and Ashley had an acting coach who ran through their lines over and over with them until they could mimick them back to her flawlessly. In order to practise the line where they enthusiastically say, "Detective Girls!", the twins called out "Ghostbusters!" a few times to get the feel the line needed.

While they ran through the lines again and again, the director, Neil Isreal, came over to me and instructed me as to what I was to do. It didn't consist of much - I was to walk across the deck, then come back, stop in the middle, and fake looking at a map of the ship. We did run-throughs a couple of times, then we filmed the scene. It took about 3 takes - and 2 hours - to get it right. Poor Ashley and Mary-Kate looked terribly bored and tired.

See the girl in the flowered shorts and blue top in the background? That's me.

Later that day, I filmed another scene which consisted of nothing but sitting on a beach chair for a while.

Another scene I was an extra in was the one where Mary-Kate and Ashley's "parents" are sitting on a deck chair, talking about how the girls are off playing "you know what". Originally, I had a Bugs Bunny T-shirt on, but because of copyright laws, they couldn't show it on camera, so the director told me to run to my cabin and change. I did, and when I came back, I basically was directed to just walk across the screen, then walk back and sit on a chair. If you look in the background, you can see me - I'm the red head wearing denim shorts and a white T-shirt.

The next day we were supposed to be exploring Cozumel, Mexico, but the AD (that's short for assistant director) had asked me to come to the set. We were filming the scene in which the twins sing Who Would You Be? in a talent contest. I arrived early with another girl who was an extra, Kristi Ryall, and we sat watching Mary-Kate and Ashley talk to their nannies. Ashley had an earache - she was compaining of it burning and she wanted to go back to the room. The nanny wouldn't let her and took her hand, pulling her off the chair to go and work. I just shook my head.

It was a scortching hot day and once the crew had everything set up, sunscreen was passed around. Fake glasses of juice cluttered the tables, along with the real glasses of water we desperately needed to keep cool. The extras were precisely sat at the tables - I was with a girl, who I guess was playing my sister, and her mother.

A girl stood out of view with huge white cards that had the words to Who Would You Be? written on them as Mary-Kate and Ashley stood on stage to lipsync.

During the filming of "Who Would You Be?", I witnessed a fight between the girls. Mary-Kate had heard the director yell "Cut!", but Ashley hadn't, so when Mary-Kate didn't begin to walk down the steps, she gave her sister a shove. Mary-Kate, of course, got annoyed and turned around to yell at Ashley. But, for the most part, they seem to get along well.

Take after take was done, with different angles. The extras were then rearranged to get shots of the audience. We even taped the sound of our applause.

Later that day, I was asked to film the scene where Mary-Kate and Ashley are walking with their on-screen parents on the deck, talking about how everyone on the ship is a suspect. Originally, I was asked to walk infront of them as they were about to pass, but we began filming and then realized that the sound guy, who was holding the microphone along the ground in front of the girls, was in my way. We started over again and I walked behind the twins. Neither girl looked very happy when the cameras stopped rolling. I felt bad for Ashley, especially, who had an earache still, plus was suffering from seasickness.

You know the scene where the girls get Mr. Kramer's fingerprints and he gets ink all over his face? For obvious reasons, they only did one take of that! I watched it from the deck above.

After filming was over, they were giving away the stars used in the Talent Show scene, and I got 3 of them - 2 medium-sized silver ones, and one big silver-and-blue one.

The whole experience was very cool, and when the video actually came out, I got to see my self on camera with the Olsen twins!
