Dragging Alec into it

Chapter 16—This is it folks.  If you want more—REVIEW.  There are definite sequel possibilities.

Twenty armed military personnel were there to unload the truck.  Two men threw open the doors.

“It’s…empty,” one soldier turned to the other in confusion.

“Well, it is now,” a voice whispered behind them before crushing their heads together.

Alec smiled as they fell, picking up their weapons.  He turned around to find everyone else doing the same thing.  Except Max, of course.

The Mouth came around the side of the truck, stepping over a few bodies, looking from Max to Alec as everyone gathered around them.  “Are we gonna kick some ass here or do the lovebirds need another ‘break’ first?”

Biggs tossed him a gun.  “They’re set for another few minutes,” he said with a smile.

Max rolled her eyes, “We find the transgenics and get them out of here.  Take any weapons you see lying around, knock out the electronics unless you think we could use it.”

Alec looked around the circle and everyone nodded, “Let’s go.”

There were two doors to their area.  Biggs and Mouth took their team one way, Max and Alec went the other.  It was like a dungeon, Max kicked open the first door, but the room was empty.  What was this place?

They skipped the rest of the doors, following noises from around the corner.

“You get surveillance on Terminal City yet, Otto?” Whites voice echoed into the hall.

“Not yet, sir, we were waiting on those digital imagers.”

“Radio down, see if they’re unloaded.”

Max and Alec exchanged glances at this.  Max held up a fist and the X6s nodded.  Smashing his foot into the door, Alec lead them into a room filled with computers and military personnel.  White and Otto were standing in front of a large thermal imaging device.

“There’s no answer from the…” Otto trailed off as Max smiled at him.

“And there won’t be,” she assured him as he looked for White, who was on the floor unconscious.  He looked around frantically and Max smiled at the sound of bodies hitting the floor behind her.

Otto didn’t bother reaching for his gun and Alec came up next to him and grabbed it for him.  “Nice,” he said with a grin, tucking it into his waistband.  “Someone grab me some duct tape…?”

An X6 tossed him a roll and lifted his gun to destroy the computer equipment.

“Wait!” Max looked at all the hardware in the room.  “Load this stuff in the truck…” she trailed off as she realized Otto was listening.  “ ‘Night,” she whispered as her fist met his face.

Otto landed on top of White, Alec shrugged and duct taped them together.

The three X6s loaded computer equipment as Max and Alec continued tying people up.

Alec chuckled at his own work, “Hey Maxie, look where I put their hands.”

“Alec, would you grow up?!”

He sulked, “You didn’t even look.”

Max rolled her eyes, it was like having a child.  “Fine, I’m looking…it’s…” she burst out laughing.

Alec’s grin broadened until she kicked him.  “What?”

“Go look at the files, see what we can find out while we’re here.”

He shrugged, still grinning and started looking through the file cabinets.

Max was looking through papers on the desk when the door flew open.  They both blurred into action before they realized it was the Mouth.

785 looked around the room, nodding approvingly.  “We found the transgenics, they’re all loaded up…” his voice trailed off as he noticed Otto and White.  Lips twitching, he looked at Max, who rolled her eyes, and then at Alec, who beamed back at him.

“452,” he sighed, “There are some life choices you may want to rethink.”

“Hey Max,” Alec ignored the Mouth, “You ever wonder how they get funding for this off the books?” he held up a file.  “Most interesting, of course, is the employee list…names and addresses,” he plopped the second file on top of the first.  “Informants,” he grinned dangerously.

“Base, come in,” the radio lying next to Otto started talking and the transgenics looked at each other.  “Nearing location.  Over.”

Mouth shrugged and picked up the radio, “This is base, what’s your status?  Over.”

“ETA 10 minutes.  Confirm delivery alpha charlie niner. Over.”

Max leaned forward and started typing on one of the few computers they had left.  “It’s a helicopter,” she whispered.

“Landing confirmed,” said the Mouth, “Over.”

“Copy that.”

“Base out.”

“They’re delivering more thermal imagers…for hoverdrones,” Max read off the information in the computer.

The X6s came back into the room.

“Building secure,” said one, “After this run,” he gestured to the computer equipment remaining in the room, We’re a go.”

“Can you fly a helicopter?” Max asked the Mouth as the X6s grabbed the remaining computer equipment.

“No,” he shook his head, “But X5s can.”  His gaze flickered to Alec, who was studiously avoiding Max’s gaze.

“You can fly a helicopter?” she asked him as he pulled out a file, grinning.

“Anyone need a sector pass for a military convoy?” he asked, tossing the file to the Mouth.

“Alec?” Max asked.

“Yes, I can fly a helicopter, but they aren’t as fun as the F32,” he answered her.

“Do you need two people?”

Alec shrugged, “It’s easier.”

Biggs walked into the room, “We’re ready to go, guys.”

“Change of plans,” Max told him, “You and Alec are taking the helicopter back to Terminal City.  I’d change if I were you,” she smiled as they started pulling military garb off the unconscious soldiers.

“So we’re taking the truck back?” 785 asked.

Max smiled, “Nope, you are.  You’ve got the pass, get the stuff back to Terminal City, I’ll see you there later.”

“What are you going to do?” Biggs asked.

“Burn the rest of the files and trash the thermal imager.”

“See you at Jam Pony?” Alec asked.

“Yeah, well…I might be late, I need to shower.”

“You?  Late?” he asked.

“Don’t you have a helicopter to steal?” her eyes narrowed.

“Maybe,” he threw a shirt over his head.

“Oh, God,” the Mouth broke into their conversation, “Just kiss her and get it over with.”

Biggs chuckled slightly and headed out the door.  The Mouth rolled his eyes and followed him.

“I’ll try to keep Normal from firing you,” Alec walked over to her.

Max shrugged, “I found about 20 sector passes on the desk, I’m good for awhile.”

There was a groan below them and they looked down to meet White’s furious gaze.

Alec smiled tightly, “White, good to see you,” he crouched down next to him.  “Much as I would love to see you this way forever…I didn’t bring a camera.  Say ‘thank you.’”

White glared at him, gagged.

“Oh well,” Alec slammed White’s head against the floor and stood up.  “Sorry about that,” he pulled Max toward him and kissed her, hard.

“You have to go,” she whispered, pulling herself away from him.

Alec smiled, handing her his gun.  “Have fun,” he said, walking out the door.

“You too,” she muttered, “I can’t wait to trash this bitch.”

“Dix,” Alec was on the phone, “We’re bringing in a helicopter…any landing suggestions…?”

AT JAM PONY

“Where’s Max?” Normal asked Alec.

“She’ll be in,” he answered, “It’s my fault…kept her up kinda late last night.”

Normal wrinkled his nose, disgusted.

“THIS IS A SPECIAL NEWS BULLETIN,” blared from the TV and everyone turned toward it.  “Last night’s crime spree reached its climax this morning with a strike on a military base within the city that held several transgenics awaiting transport.  It is unknown how many men were killed in this attack, but it has been confirmed that it was perpetrated by members of the X-Series.”

Someone grabbed Alec’s hand and he looked down at Max.

“The military command of Seattle would like to assure the people that they are doing everything they can to protect its people from the threat the transgenics pose.”

Max rolled her eyes, squeezing Alec’s hand.  “I hope you don’t need sleep,” she whispered to him.

“Depends what you have in mind,” he murmured, looking down at her slyly.

“Let’s go in back and discuss it.”

Alec’s eyes widened and he propelled her into the back room.  Max laughed as he closed the door.

“So…you want to do something about that employee list you pulled out of there?”

Alec shook his head honestly, kissing her throat and unbuttoning her shirt.

“Alec…” she sighed, “We have to take the offensive while we can…”

“Later,” he whispered against her lips, claiming them forcefully.

Max gave up and kissed him back.  The world melted away and it was just the two of them.  No government conspiracy.  No breeding cult.  No Terminal City.  It was just Max and Alec…until Normal started banging on the door.
