Dragging Alec into it
Chapter 15
“Dix, you happen to know
when the sun comes up?” Max called out to Dix from where she stood
with Alec.
“Bout fifteen minutes from
now, why?”
“Damn.” Max murmured.
She didn’t want to launch an offensive in the mid-morning sun.
Alec turned to Max with a
sly look, “Max, I’ve got an idea.”
“Didn’t I tell you
‘later?’” she asked, grinning.
“Not that kind of idea,” he said.
“Well, not JUST that kind,” he amended.
Max smiled. “What’s the idea?”
“Well, weren’t they
supposed to get a delivery within the hour?”
Alec asked.
“Yes, and now that you
mention it, I believe that we are the people
responsible for stopping that delivery.”
“Maybe we should replace
it…you know, do the right thing…whaddayasay, Max?”
“Well, you know I like to
do the right thing,” she said, grabbing his phone. “Hey
“Speaking of doing the
right thing,” Alec muttered.
Max gave him a dark look
and he sulked.
Hanging up the phone, she
handed it back to him with a smile.
“Superman pulled it off
again?” Alec asked.
Max ignored him, turning
to Dix instead. “Where’s
785? We need an army.”
Alec smiled. “That’s what I’m talking about.” He scanned the room, seeing a few Xs walking
around the place.
“You called?” The Mouth walked through the door with two of
his X6 buddies.
“Hey, Mouth, we need an X
army.”
“Really…how
big?”
Max and Alec looked at
each other, calculating.
“Ten?” Max guessed.
785 looked around the
room. “Well, one,” he pointed to
himself, “Two, three,” the X6s, “Four, five,” Max and Alec, “Six,” Biggs…”Can
anyone that looks human please get your ass over here…?” he shouted, “Seven,
eight, nine and ten.” 785 finished, winking
at Max.
Dix came over and handed
Max a map, muttering that it was from
“Can all of you make it
here?” she pointed to the map.
All the Xs nodded their
heads.
“In twenty minutes?” Alec
asked.
They all looked surprised,
but still nodded affirmatively.
“We’re going to steal a truck here,” Max
pointed, “Then we’re driving over HERE to pick up some transgenics they nailed
with those new thermal gating systems.”
“Everyone get into Sector
9 and meet at the checkpoint in twenty minutes.
The truck isn’t the hard part, though, we’ll
talk about the plan there.” Alec continued as Max nodded.
785 shrugged and looked
around at the troops he’d selected, “Any questions?”
“Let’s go,” said Max,
grabbing Alec’s phone as they walked.
“
Alec rolled his eyes as
she hung up.
The sun was starting to
come up as Max and Alec hopped on their twin ninjas.
“Ready?” Max asked, slipping
on her sunglasses.
Alec revved his engine,
pulled out his shades and leaned his head toward her. “I’m always ready,” he said, hitting the gas.
Alec smiled slightly as
they approached the checkpoint, meeting her eyes as they stopped and
remembering their last Check Point.
“Jam Pony Messengers,”
They held up their badges and were waved right through. It was almost disappointing.
785 was
sitting by a truck when they got to their destination.
“You needed 10 of us for that?” he asked, gesturing toward only a
few unconscious bodies, looking sorely disappointed.
“Don’t worry, Mouth, that
was the easy part,” Alec assured him as Biggs and the last of the X6s arrived
on the scene.
Alec’s phone rang, “Alec,
go.”
“According to the Sector
Police, a truck went through the gates 6 minutes ago and should be there within
fifteen.”
Alec grinned, “Thanks,
“Tell Max to be careful.”
“Come on,
“Exactly.”
“I’ll let her know,” Alec
hung up. “Sector Police records have the
truck coming through six minutes ago, let’s move.”
“Mouth,” Max turned to 785
as Alec chuckled at her use of the name, “You and Biggs take those three,” she
divided the Xs in half, arbitrarily, “We’ll take these these guys and take out
their electronics. We think White is the only familiar there,
but be careful.”
“So who gets to drive this
beast?” 785 asked.
Max grinned at him, “Who
do you think?”
“So I’m the one that has
to convince them to let me through the gate?”
“That’s right…and they’re
expecting you soon. Let’s go, people.”
They all clambered into
the back of the truck and 785 grinned at them as he shut them into the
darkness.
“Why can’t I see?” Alec
asked immediately.
“Uhh…it’s dark, Alec.”
Biggs pointed out the obvious.
“So? I’m X5.”
“The place is light
tight,” Max pointed out, “Even we can’t see if…” she broke off, “OK, this
better be Alec or you’re LOSING that hand.”
Alec laughed, “Sorry,
trying to find your hand.”
“Really…that’s a big
search.”
He pulled her towards him
and she could feel him smiling against her neck.
“Uhh…guys?” Biggs broke
in, “That silence is a little inappropriate in front of the kids, don’t you think?”
“Shut up, Biggs, we’re not
doing anything,” Alec lied.
The truck started turned,
throwing Max and Alec against the wall.
“Uh-huh,” Biggs clearly
didn’t believe them.
“Here’s the deal, guys,”
Max started to instruct them while Alec tried to distract her. “The second the doors are open,” Alec ran his
hand down her arm, “Get out of the truck as fast as you can…” he kissed her
neck, “Take out EVERYONE in the room immediately. I don’t think White will be there and I don’t
want to warn him.” Max bit back a groan
as she finished her instructions, elbowing Alec.
“Turn you on?” he asked
softly.
Max leaned back into him,
sliding down his body and then back up.
All the air hissed out of him as he flipped her around to face him.
“Turn you on?” she
whispered.
“I think you know,” Alec
crushed her lips.
“Guys, we’re gonna get
there any…” They rolled over a curb as Biggs spoke.
Max and Alec pulled away
from each other reluctantly and listened to the Mouth.
“Got a delivery, here…said
they needed it asap.”
“Let me radio to see if
you’re expected,” said the guard.
“Sure, go ahead,” 785
sounded bored.
“Boss, we have a truck
here for a delivery… You’ve got the OK,
take the truck around the curve, we’ll unload and have
you out of here.”
“Sounds good,” the truck
started moving again and the transgenics let out their breath.
“Ready?” Max whispered.
“Always,” was the answer.
She smiled as the truck
stopped and the doors opened.
