Wind whipped through Max’s
hair as they sped toward the checkpoint they had busted through not two hours
ago. Much as Alec loved her beautiful hair,
he was positive his face would be covered with welts in the morning.
The checkpoint was getting
closer. Alec hit redial.
“We’re there, get us
through!” he yelled. He didn’t bother
listening for a response.
As expected, security had
gone through the roof in the last couple hours.
As they drove in under the light, Alec started kissing the back of Max’s
neck. She giggled, the sound of which
almost broke his concentration. He
massaged her shoulder and she leaned back against him as the guard walked up.
“Sector Passes?” The guard demanded, automatically eyeing them
suspiciously, if only because of the time.
“We’re Jam Pony
Messengers.” Max said breathlessly,
pulling out her ID and slapping Alec.
He looked up from her
neck. “ID?” he asked, as though he
hadn’t been paying attention. The guard
nodded in affirmation. Alec shrugged and
pulled out his Jam Pony ID badge. “Hey,
are we gonna be here awhile?” He leaned
forward and slipped his arm under Max’s leg, pulling her onto his lap.
Max twisted toward Alec,
wrapping an arm around his neck as he kissed her.
The guard shifted back and
forth uncomfortably. “Hey,” he tried to
get the couple’s attention. They didn’t
seem inclined to listen. “You’re out
pretty late…”
Alec’s cell phone
rang. He tried to answer it without
pulling away from Max. “mm…hello?” he finally broke away from her to speak, but
didn’t look happy about it.
Max pouted slightly and
played with his ear, rolling her eyes at the guard.
Alec kept talking, “Umm…no…no,
sir…we didn’t go anywhere. Sure, she’s
right here, we just wanted to get some early breakfast.” Alec looked at his watch and winced. “It’s your dad!” he mouthed to Max, making sure the guard
understood as well. “Sure, here she is.”
Max took the phone from
him, “Hey Daddy,” she said to Logan.
“You guys need
anything?” he asked.
“No, we’ll definitely be
home in twenty minutes.” Max smiled at
the guard at this point. He couldn’t
resist smiling back at her.
Alec COULD resist rolling
his eyes at this exchange, but only barely.
He hid his smile in the nape of her neck.
“No, daddy, I
promise! We weren’t at the cabin. We were at Josh’s yesterday. Well, of course we weren’t alone!” Max smiled sweetly. The guard was enamored of her, despite her
blatant lies. “He wants to talk to you
again.” She handed the phone back to
Alec and motioned to the guard to come close for a secret. “Daddy doesn’t like it when we’re alone
together.”
“I can see why.” The guard muttered.
Max giggled.
Alec choked slightly in
the background, attempting to assure “Daddy” that his “precious” would be home
in twenty minutes.
“Is this actually working
on the guard?” Logan asked in the midst
of Alec’s monologue.
“Have you ever looked into
her eyes and tried to say ‘no’…?” Alec
asked.
Logan had, in fact. “I guess we’ll see you in twenty minutes.”
“Twenty minutes, if not
SOONER, sir.” Alec emphasized, hanging
up the phone.
Max laughed and snuggled
against him. “Baby, how are we going to
get back in twenty minutes?”
“You’re going to drive
like hell.” He turned to the guard, “Are we done here, is there anything you need
to check? Search? Whatever it is you do…?”
The guard turned from Alec
to Max, who was smiling at him. He
handed them their IDs.
“Come in at more reasonable
hours next time.” The guard gave Max a
reassuring smile and Alec a warning frown.
“Oh, but Daddy wouldn’t…”
Max started to explain the story to the guard, but Alec nudged her.
“Speaking of Daddy, we
need to leave,” he reminded her.
Max slid off of Alec’s lap
and started the engine. “Bye!” she waved
at the guard as the two of them rode away.
They were back in nineteen
minutes.
“Nice timing,” said Mole
as they climbed off the motorcycle.
“How are things going,
Dix?” Max turned to Dix, who shrugged. “Someone get me Logan.”
Dix gestured to the
computer screen and Max saw Logan’s face smiling at her.
“Hey Daddy.”
“Hey yourself. I guess you go back on time. What’s going on over there?” Max turned around to find Alec collecting
money.
“Looks like a bet…”
Alec caught her eye and
came over. “Max, you want in on
this? We’re trying to see who can last
the longest.” He gestured toward the
arctic vs. desert championship.
“No,” she shook her head,
turning back to Logan.
Alec shrugged.
“I’ll let you get back to
the party,” Logan started to say.
Max cut him off, “Did you
find out where they are holding the transgenics?”
“You aren’t done for the
night?” he asked incredulously.
“What do you want me to
do, sleep?”
“Yeah, I think I found
them. They were supposed to leave on the
truck you took out.”
Max grinned, “Nice bonus.”
“I’ll give you the
address, but you know that White will be there,” Logan warned.
“There’s nothing I’d like
better than to beat his ass yet again.”
Logan shook his head, but
gave her the address.
“Thanks, Logan.”
“No problem, call if you
need anything,” he offered, as always.
“We’ll do that,” she said
softly, terminating video.
Max wrote the address on a
piece of paper and handed it to Dix.
“I need a map of this
location.”
Dix scurried off and Max
looked around for Alec, smiling when she spotted him. He was leaning against the wall, a content
look on his face, counting his winnings.
“You ready?” she asked,
sneaking up beside him.
A grin split his
face. “For anything.”
“Good,” she smiled. “We have the address on the base holding the
transgenics.”
“Oh,” he looked
momentarily disappointed.
“The sooner we know what
we’re doing, the sooner we can deal with more interesting things.”
Alec caught her smile and
raised his eyebrows. “When do we leave?”
