What is the Popular Idea Film?
This new refined art form consists of expensive, high quality films that combine dazzling special affects and appealing pop-culture elements with deep, malleable intellectualism. The result of this combination is a highly imaginative and interpretive project that has unchallenged popular appeal and rich philosophical content. The two affects, visual entertainment and intellectual stimulation, are not entirely separate units; they combine with amazing synergism in a manner which owes its success to the brilliance of the psychoanalytic tradition.
The main precept of foundational postmodernism, as visualized through this concept, is that any philosophical thought owes its tenacity and brilliance to the foundational sub-system from which it grows. One secondary conclusion as suggestion is that critical analysis to the present has paid too little attention to foundational subtext. A weak philosophy must be undermined at its basic elements in order to derail mystification.
These film projects that make up the Popular Idea Film concept combine pop-culture elements with deep thought. When I discuss the former I am primarily referring to high-tech realistic special effects, high-profile popular actors, pop-culture vernacular in both language and images, and what could be called popular postmodern ideology. There is no doubt that on the surface our culture now maintains beliefs, however ill-defined, regarding alienation, popular rebellion, disaffiliation, moral decline, and, as Slavoj Zizek writes, mass disintegration of all ideological centers. This lack of a modernist center may indeed be a smoke-screen for the reintegration of traditional values, but it nonetheless finds its roots in the deeper, less articulated philosophy of the new postmodernist.
