OConnor and OMahony
Edward OConnor and Elizabeth OMahoney
Catherine, daughter of Edward OConnor and Elizabeth OMahoney, was born January 10, 1886 at Kilmore, Bandon, Cork, Ireland. She sailed from Cobh Harbor when she immigrated to the United States in 1908. She was in Newton, Massachusetts by 1910 where she worked as housekeeper for a protestant minister's family. She married Daniel Joseph McCarthy in Newton on April 21, 1914 and had five children. She died April 3, 1949 at Brighton, Massachusetts.
Her family lived at Bandon, Brinny, Kilmore, Kinalmeaky, Cork, Ireland in 1901 and at Castlenelact and Shanaclough, Enniskeane, Cork in 1885. Kinalmeaky is in the civil parish of Murragh, County Cork.
Catherines father, Edward OConnor, was born 1861 at Castlenalact, Cork, Ireland and died 27 Jan 1925 Kilmore, Bandon, Cork, Ireland. Her mother, Elizabeth O'Mahoney was born 24 February 1862 at Castletown, Cork, Ireland and died 28 February 1938 at Kilmore, Bandon, Cork, Ireland. She is buried at Templemartin, East Carberry West, Cork, Ireland.
The marriage of Edward OConnor and Elizabeth OMahony occurred 10 February 1885 at Enniskeane Church, Enniskeane, Murragh, Bandon, Cork, Ireland. Edward, age 26, resided at Castlenelact; Denis Conner was named as his father. Eliza Mahony, 23, resides at Shanaclough, and Andrew Mahony is her father. Michael Delay, P.P. officiated and witnesses were James Noonan and Maria Mahony.
Edward OConnor and Elizabeth OMahoney had ten children. 1. Catherine Theresa OConnor, 1886 2. Mary Theresa O'Connor, 1888 3. Dennis O'Connor, 1890 4. Hannah Josephine O'Connor, 1892 5. Ellen O'Connor, 1893 6. Elizabeth O'Connor, Mar 1897 7. Eugene O'Connor, 1899 8. Nora Christina O'Connor, 1901 9. Patrick Augustine O'Connor, 1904 10. Andy O'Connor, 1905-d.1908
The administration of Edward OConnor occurred 16 May 1925. {Wills and Administrations 1925 vol., County Cork, Ireland}: Admin. 16 May 1925 Admin of estate of Edward O'Connor, late of Kilmore, Co.Cork, labourer, who died 27 January 1925, granted at Cork to Elizabeth O'Connor, the widow. Effects L21.6s. 0d.". I suspect that he died after 1910 but prior to 1913 because he is listed in the Griffiths Valuations for the townland of Kilmore through 1910 but Eliza is listed beginning in 1913, indicating he was dead.
Edward and Elizas family are enumerated in the 1901 census of County Cork, Ireland South East Cork, Bandon, Brinny, Townland Kilmore, Barony Kinalmeaky, Parish Brinny. Their younger sons, Patrick and Andy, were not yet born and Catherine, Denis, Ellen and Eugene are not in their home in this census. Where are they? They are too young to be on their own and Ive not located them in the 1901 census thus must consider that Denis, Ellen and Eugene may be dead. However they may have been living as Catherine most definitely was.

Mary, Catherine, and Hannah OConnor came to the United States between 1905 and 1910. Norah immigrated about 1927/28 then returned to Ireland in 1931 to care for her ailing mother. She then returned to US in 1938/39 after her mother's death. Catherine O'Connor McCarthy had two aunts, Maggie and Mariah, already in Massachusetts when she arrived in 1909. Mariah OMahoney married John Egan Murray and lived at Chesnut Hill, Newton Center, Massachusetts. Maggie was Margaret Louise OMahoney who married Daniel Joseph Hourihan and lived at Newton Center, Massachusetts.
Dennis OConnor and Catherine Kelliher
Dennis O'Connor was born about 1820 in Ireland. His parentage is unknown but he married Catharine Kelleher before 1861 when their son, Edward O'Connor was born. She was born about 1826 in County Cork. Her parentage is also unknown. Their children are: 1. Edward OConnor, 1861 2. Jeremiah O'Connor, 1867 3. John O'Connor 4. Dennis O'Connor 5. Mary O'Connor 6. Hannah O'Connor 7. Nellie O'Connor 8. Nora O'Connor
The Directory of Munster 1886, F.Guy Ballinhassig (FHC # 1559399), lists: Edward O'Connor (Victuallers), Ballybunion, parish Killehenny, Co.Kerry. (This is 10 miles from Listowel.)Not our Edward but some of our family are supposedly buried at Killhenny; Edward O'Connor (also John O'C.) - Donnybrook, Doneraile, Doneraile, Cork. This is 28 miles from Cork and 5 from Buttevant.) Denis O'Connor - 1886 - Lisheenafela, Boherbue, Kilmeen, Cork (8 miles from Kanturk, Newmarket, Cork. Not sure this Dennis is ours.)
The valuation for County Cork was taken about 1852 and, I believe, the Denis Connor in 2b is ours. The others are most likely relatives, too. Ive not been able to positively identify Dunerabee or any possible spelling of it. This is merely a possibility: Townland -Acres -County Barony- Civil Parish- PLU -Province) Dunkereen -454- Cork, E.R. - Kinalea- Inishannon- Bandon Munster
Catherine and her son, Jeremiah are enumerated in the 1901 census of Castlenelacht, Brinny,Kinalmeaky, Cork, Ireland, house #9: Catherine OConnor, head- RC- 75- f- widow- Co Cork- housekeeper for son Jeremiah OConnor son RC- 34- m- s- Co Cork- agricultural laborer.
This enumeration demonstrates that Dennis OConnor died prior to 1901 while Catherine died after 1901.
Andrew OMahoney and Mary OLeary
Elizabeth O'Mahoney, born 24 Feb 1862, is the daughter of Andrew O'Mahoney and Mary O'Leary. Andrew O'Mahoney was born 1825 and died 20 Aug 1917 at Shanaclogh, Murragh, Cork, Ireland. Mary OLeary was born 1831 at County Kerry, Ireland and died 14 May 1905 at Shanaclogh. Both are buried at Kilhenny, Cork, Ireland.
Killhenny, where Andrew and Mary are buried, is an area in Cork near the Kerry border and is not County Killkenny.
Their children of Andrew O'Mahoney and Mary O'Leary are: 1. Elizabeth O'Mahoney, 1862 2. Andrew O'Mahoney, 1 Jun 1866 Ballineen, Cork, Ireland 3. Margaret Louise O'Mahoney, 12 Sep 1863 4. Mary " Mariah " O'Mahoney, about Feb 1865 5. Patrick O'Mahoney, about 1868 (Patrick was only four years old when he died in 1872. I think he was burned to death.)
This 1996 IGI record absolutely must be the brother of my Elizabeth. Andrew Mahoney, b. 01 June 1866 Ballineen, Cork, Ireland, son of Andrew Mahoney and Mary Leary. (C 701291; -1866; film # 101129)
Griffiths Valuation for Shanaclough demonstrates that Andrew OMahony lived there as early as 1888 and through 1911 or 1912. 1c - Andrew OMahony 1888, 1889 1c Andrew Mahony 1910, 1911 or 1912
