| It's mid June on a Saturday afternoon. You notice a heavy line of clouds building in the southwest corner of the county. As the day grows older, you begin to notice the clouds are heavier and seem to have more depth to them. They begin to move closer to town. You know this is prime time for tornado activity and you begin to gather your outdoor pets and your family. You move inside where it feels safer. When suddenly you hear the tornado sirens begin to sound. Now you move to the storm cellar and seek cover. You grab your scanner as you enter your storm cellar and here a warning go over the radio: TORNADO ON THE GROUND - MOVING NORTHEAST TOWARDS THE CENTER OF TOWN!!! MOVING AT APROXIMATELY 45 MILES PER HOUR. You join your family and listen to the howling winds of destruction. When the storm is over, you emmerge to find you are fortunate, but many other homes were not as fortunate. However, everyone survived this tragedy thanks to early warnings. Every tornado season, there is a group of volunteers who strategically place themselves to watch threatening storms. These volunteers do so in hopes that in the case of a tornado, citizens of Crowell and Foard county will have a advanced warning and seek cover. These men and women are not paid - just volunteers. They risk their lives in threatening weather, to ensure advanced warnings of dangerous storms which can develop during tornado season. |
