In the slightly bizzare file . . .

Gladiator fever hits Rome - Modern Romans have been so inspired by the film Gladiator that bank clerks, accountants and traffic wardens have signed up in droves for a course teaching them how to learn the deadly fighting skills.

Two months of coaching at the Gruppo Storico Romano, situated on the Appian Way, costs 75.

Students are taught how to use a gladius, the sword used by Russell Crowe in the film, and three different types of combat.

The school has been open for six years but since the movie was released it has been flooded with applicants, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Sergio Iacomoni, who runs it each evening after he finishes work as a bank clerk, said: "The film has created gladiator fever in Rome. If we were to stand outside cinemas selling ancient Roman weapons we could become millionaires."

In the latest Meg Ryan, Dennis Quaid, and Russell Crowe saga . . .

Actor Dennis Quaid has filed for divorce from Meg Ryan.

Quaid, 46, cited irreconcilable differences in petitioning to end his marriage of nearly 10 years to the 38-year-old actress.

Reports have linked Ryan with the star of Gladiator, Russell Crowe, but her publicist denied that a "third-party" was the reason for the divorce request.

Ryan and Crowe appear in the forthcoming romantic comedy Proof of Life.

Quaid and Ryan announced their separation on June 28 after learning that The Sun planned to publish a story saying they were splitting up.

Publicist Lisa Kasteler in Los Angeles said the couple had been apart for about six weeks at the time of the announcement.

The couple met on the set of Innerspace and began dating a year later. They were married on Valentine's Day 1991 and Ryan had the couple's only child, Jack Henry, in 1992.

Quaid wants joint custody of their son.

People Magazine - Russell Crowe One Busy Guy

Matinee idol Russell Crowe, 36, figures prominently in this week's PEOPLE cover story on the surprising marital split -- after nine years -- of Meg Ryan, 38, and Dennis Quaid, 46. The New Zealand bachelor has been spotted out on the town in London with the perky blond star, with whom he stars in the upcoming film "Proof of Life." After numerous sightings of the couple spending time off the set, Friday's New York Post ran a photo of Crowe and Ryan holding hands as they left Tom Cruise's party for the London premiere of "Mission: Impossible 2." The snapshot reputedly marks the first time the two have stopped going out of their way not to be photographed together.

Meanwhile, the Oscar nominee (for last year's "The Insider"), who has gained hordes of new fans since donning his "Gladiator" skirt, will next star in "Flora Plum," a relatively low-budget ($30 million) movie to be directed by Jodie Foster, whose role will be confined to behind the camera. The Associated Press says Crowe will play a circus freak who takes a starving young woman (Claire Danes) under his wing. The flick is due to start shooting in central Florida come September.
