Issue 1
We begin with our friendly trolls doing their PR work for the new "king" of the lands, Mordath. A particularly frightening scene of the troll about to chop a young girl starts the book and at just the last minute an arrow finds its target and the troll is down, the girl is safe and we see Arwyn and Kreeg. The little girl is so relieved, then the dad, who surrvived the attack emerges and is reunited with his daughter. The father explains how Mordath's troops have taken over the villiage, he advised Arwyn to flee. She will not. Not without her husband and daughter, so off she races into her villiage to get her family...
As she races home the narration continues from a character we have yet to meet, and won't meet for another issue. Her villiage, Gerrindor, was the final one yet to be conquered by Mordath. The all red sigil is all over the fallen villiage, smoke and flames are everywhere. Arwyn is not prepared for what was ahead of her...
She races into her flaming house, calling out for her husband Darian, and daughter Neera, her little girls doll lays broken on the ground... Then she is struck from behind by a troll. The battle begins!!!
Arwyn shows her strength as she absorbs a number of crushing blows, and also takes the offensive nailing several trolls with deadly accuracy with her bow, and the occasional assist by Kreeg!!! Then she gets pinned and about to get a sword in the head, when she reaches out, finds a short sword and impales the troll, then with that sword takes out several more trolls showing great spped, skill and relflexes with that weapon and it all fueled by a fierce spirit.
Then she sees her fallen husband...and her dead little girl, she is overcome with sorrow and loss, Kreeg seeks to console her...It is all gone up like smoke in the air...she has lost it all...except her anger....
She vows to kill Mordath, Who then makes his first resurrected presense, not nearly as handsome as previous, but all the more evil...the Five Lands are in his grasp...and he is delighted!!!
I started with the Collected Edition which showcased this issue and the prequel. The art by Land, and storytelling by Marz is off to a good start, the characters are relateable, and the attention to details and backgrounds is amazing. The rest of the creative team is Geraci and Rodriguez, and they all work together very well!!
