The following is actually based on a real dream of mine which I woke up from at 5:30 in the morning. Cool, non? =D I experimented with two forms and they both look fine so I put both of them here. With a little colored background stripe they would make a neat background, don't you think? I guess I could try working on that ..

     The sweetest
              dreams
                  are
      what truly break
                 your
               heart
     The moment you
             wake
            up
            &
        remember
             it
               too

              The
            sweetest
                dreams
                    are
                    what
                  truly
                 break
                your
              heart
                the
                 moment
                  you
                wake
               up
              &
        remember
             it

Crazy Limericks (March 24, 1999)
Copyright (c) 1999 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

I know this girl named Jo
She plays the pi-a-NO
We used to be roomies
And once drank slurpies
But I haven't seen her for 3 months in a row

I know this guy named Leslie
He is definitely not seventy
But he has a girl's name
But that is not a shame
Because Leslie Neilson shares that glory

I know this girl named Yeni
She also likes Tomorrow in Annie
We had physics together
We sat beside each other
Free chicken made it fine and dandy

I know this girl named Sang mi
Her drawings were deep and lovely
She always had bangs
She read White Fang
And now she's taking philosophy

I know this girl named Jess
Her room is never a mess
She changed her name
To that of an English dame
But she's still the same more or less

I know this girl named Shaila
She painted her nails blue and silva
And on a rainy day
Long ago, far away
I joined the Yellow Dot Mafia

I know this guy named Brendan
He probably eats eggs and bacon
I met him at a seminar
He was definitely not from Mars
Because last time I saw him was at Algonquin

I know this guy named Adrian
I wonder if he drinks Evian
He's a genius at math
He's walked the IMO path
He might just develop the next Pythagorean

I know this guy named Louis
He is anything but clueless
He has ICQ
And says Aqua's cute
Wonder why he's midnight@mindless?

I know this girl named Denise
She strikes up the tune Fur Elise
In the midst of the music
She hears the timer click
And then someone starts to boom Grease?!

Yiff I were a can of sardine
I'd be roaming the streets of Berlin
I wouldn't be cold for I have my skin
Maybe I was born with it, but maybe it's Mabelline.

Yiff I were a dish of salt
I'd stand atop the world in halt
On wounds and scrapes my crystals will soon exalt
And I can't wait for that chaotic result

Yiff I were a sheet of paper
I'd hide myself inside a diaper
Then the world will be left with frustrated murmurs
Of cursing-obscenity mothers

Yiff I were a bar of soap
I'd weep all day long and mope
And people could say I have no hope
Should I stop bubbling? Nope!

However,

Yiff I were a delicious bottle of incense
I might just stop this load of nonsense
Clearly, I know nothing of quarterback defense
Or is the thing they do called offense?

To PsyChikka, thanks for making all those days fun and bearable;
To Chocolate Monster, love;
To Adrian, thanks for being in the pictures I am running out of words (au secours!!);
To Jess, thanks for the super crazy memories;
To the rest of this superior species called mathies (J/K!! =), would someone *PLEASE* help me with this thank thing???

IT'S FINALLY FINISHED!!! I even worked out a simple but decent piano arrangment!!! I guarantee you the chorus *flows* this time. Now all I need is a piano intro (yes me have the conclusion too =)! And I also have a GRAND plan of how this song should be recorded / sung given the occasion it represents. BTW it still sounds MUCH MUCH better WITH music; it's presented in the exact order the song is sung.

And since this is (yes, as you guessed) a birthday tribute, to the birthday person: all glitches and speckles and dust spots aside, Happy Birthday! =)

Through the Candle Light (March 12, 1999)

Looking through the light
Of the candles shining so bright
All the world, all the stars
Laughing in your eyes
Seeing all the faces
Of the people you love in this place
Make you smile, make you cry
With all the snowflakes outside

Through the space, through the time
Through the days, through the nights
Through the tame, through the wild
Through the blazing candle light

There's a song across the years
There's a smile admist the tears
There's a day when all the fears
Fall behind as the skyline clears
(Ooh ooh ooh ooh)

Looking back the years
When you walked through miles of fears
All the joy, all the pain
And the laughter and tears
Seeing all the roads
That you strolled in rain and snow
Let you find the lessons you learned
And all the songs you had sung

Through the space, through the time
Through the days, through the nights
Through the tame, through the wild
Through the blazing candle light

Never hurt; never lie
Enjoy all your apple pies
Don't forget the things you learned as a child
You'll be loved; you'll be surprised
(Ooh ooh ooh ooh)

Many years from now
You'll be far, far away and gone
Please stay true, please stay you
No matter what comes around
Let us celebrate
Let us seize this happy day
Before it turns tomorrow
When we'll go different ways

Through the space, through the time
Through the days, through the nights
Through the tame, through the wild
Through the blazing candle light

Once again, another year
Flashes by and disappears
All the friends far and near
Haven't forgotten something dear
(Happy birthday)

When the Stars Are Listening In (March 6, 1999)
Copyright (c) 1999 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Turn your eyes toward the sky, they said
See those stars shimmering and shining
a long, long way from here?
It's written all over there, they said
Yes. In those stars.

No! Of course I didn't believe it then
A child grown up in science
                and Darwin's theory of evolution.
It was just another beautiful fairy tale, right?
I mean, from as long as I could remember
Elders only told kids fairy tales
because the world was an enchanted fairy land.

No! Of course I didn't believe it
              until now.

The starfield still looks the same as always
Up there in the centre of the evening sky--

Look at the girl down there,
the stars are whispering amongst themselves
Look at that child of scientific proofs and theories--
She sways and loses herself into her favourite songs
Singing her heart and soul out
        into the chilly early-spring midnight
Her eyes overwhelmed and teary
 Her heart burning and weary
Her mind a jumble of dreary
                          mess
As she wonders from time to time
                from beat to beat
Just how much is written in the stars?
How much?
Had she really crashed into her own soulmate
Whom she has just pushed away
                         that same very day?

"Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you..

Waiting for you.."

Hmmm, wonder whom she's trying to tell it to..

Footnote:

For astrology at least slightly acquainted peeps:
Here's the funny thing. Well, apparently there was an error of about 20 minutes in what I thought was my birth time. So after discovering that a few days after this, I re-did my birth chart and well, what do you know, my remiss of 20 minutes corresponds to a shifting of about 5 degrees on my birth chart, which is about 5 days of deviation in terms of the exact soulmate. Well well, as if finding out who was on your 7th house cusp wasn't enough .. =O I tell you things are getting interesting in slightly unexpected ways.

Newborn (February 10, 1999)

Spring breeze meanders across the sky
Teasing the city lights on their fingertips.
The warm glow is blurred with a dip of satin
As the invisible tide glimmers and shines.

A drop of morning dew praises the green
Before falling silently
Onto the thirst-stricken earth
With feebly brown and parched lips.
When was the last time you saw a rose cry?
When was the last time you saw a string

Of raindrops carelessly
Streaming down the delicate rose petals?
Whether it was twelve days
Or twenty months ago when the sun set
And seemed to have set forever,
It is hesistating at the waking horizon and
Wondering--
Will this year's winter chill subside?

I'll Be There For You (January, 1999)
Music and Lyrics Copyright (c) 1999 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Still remember you and I
Dreaming that one day we could fly
Swearing in the rain we'll never part
Wherever you and I will go
In the sun or in the snow
Will you still remember what we are?

When you think you're losing touch
When you think you've had too much
When love seems so impure, faith obscure
When you find the world is spinning too fast
Or that nothing will ever last
You know you'll pull through, for I'll be there for you

Hold on to your heart
And hold on to mine
In this world of fear
You're not alone

When you feeling down
I will be around
When the things go wrong
I will part that frown
When you need a friend
You can take my hand
When you feeling blue
I'll be there for you

Don't you ever wonder why
Don't you ever wonder how
I could wipe away my tears when you smile
So when you find yourself alone
Facing a strange world on your own
You'll always know, when you turn around, I'll be there

When you feeling down
I will be around
When the things go wrong
I will part that frown
When you need a friend
You can take my hand
When you feeling blue
I'll be there for you

Someday (December 25, 1998)

You know
There are too many things
I would like you to know someday
But when will I even get enough courage
To surprise you with all those things
That I would like you to know someday
But I know I would not risk it
No, not yet, not today
Unless today is the end of the world
But that seems too distant

You know
Sometimes I wish I could be brave enough
To just scream out at the top of my lungs
All those things I would like you to know someday
Maybe under your window sill maybe
If I could find your window sill first
Or maybe write it all down on sheets of papers
And shove it casually into a lilac envelope
And then into the cold, snow-covered mailbox
And then hide inside my own bedroom
From the rest of the world
Till you walk in here one day
And find me by the window and. . .
No, not yet, not now
I don't think now is a good time
I am not brave enough for that yet

You know
There are times when I pray to god
To wake up the next morning
With a past of having never ever met you
So I would not have anything
I would like you to know someday
But when the memories start to come back
And when I start to smile and cry
Simultaneously at the same time
I would get this funny feeling
Deep down in me somewhere
And I would appologize to god
And take back that prayer of mine

And then. . .

And then I would have another day all to myself
To tell the mirror one more time
All those things I would like you to know someday
And the best part is
I would also tell the mirror
Today might just be the day
When I would finally be brave enough to tell you
All those things I would like you to know
Someday

IMPORTANT NOTE: Errr, I guess I have just written another ambiguous piece of poetic rambling. It was so clear and obvious to myself at the time I wrote it but after someone's feedback (thanx, BTW) commenting on a different interpretation I read it over again and FINALLY saw the more obvious interpretation which was not intended. So please take notice that the obvious interpretation is not the one. =) The ambiguity in interpretation should be in the second stanza. And I am being too redundant and verbose again. =)

And about the title, I just happened to have ALL4ONE's I Swear playing in my head at the time I was trying to come up with a title so here's the not-so-reflective title. Very original indeed. =)

And I Swear (December 24, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Are you happy now?
Now that you have shattered the harmony
Where there were once peace and silence
There is no more
There is a stormy sea instead
And a pathetically stupid wooden boat
Though robbed of a paddle and a sail
Is being tossed and turned
I forget how many times
Still too stupid to sink

A sky so blue
A song too good to be true
I knew it would not last
And it flew by too fast
You took the paddle
You stole the sail
You set the only trap
That I would always fall
But all this time, through and through
Have you even once considered
That you might have been wrong?

It was useless to stand on the ground
The way I stood mine
For passivity leads nowhere
Silence needs a little flair
I guess this is the nineties' way
Being part of a constant battle everyday
There is always so much to fight for
When all is fair in love and war

So I cross my heart with every solemnity today
And permanently scorch the evening stars of the Milky Way
With bloody scorns of vengeance
Till high up in the sky
Dances scarlet tears and vermilion dye
A symphony of crimson tides
The Milky Way no longer white

And I swear upon every inch of my soul
And I promise you this one thing--
As long as I live
As long as I breathe
As long as I still have
The last bit of strength left to smile
To hold up a ball of fist choked with anger
To fight, to love, and to befriend
I will remain where I stand now
And I will show you what you have done
I swear to god to make this promise
That you will never see the end of this song
Until the day you will finally unfurrow
Your hostile, mistaken brows
Are you happy now?

Ravings (December 3, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Love has broken hearts
Love has dimmed stars
Love has frozen fate
Love has created hate
Love has been lost
Love has melted frost
Love has been found
Love has drowned

Okay
So love has been naughty
Love has not been perfect
Sometimes
Actually a lot of times
Love has even behaved
Deliberately shitty and crappy
Made lives absolutely miserable
Not mentioning excessively horrible and stinky
Made thousands of pillows soaked with water overnight
And thousands of plastic waste baskets
Filled with the heaviness of wet tissue balls

It has drained a river
To its very last drop
It has sucked the green out of Spring
Till the moment of its final breath
It has turned friends into foes
In the time of a simple blink
It has blinded judgement
With not a single piece of technology
But with only a pink bubble

It has recovered
From a pile of shredded hearts
On the icy, cement floor
Millions of neglected sheets
Of poetic words and musical symbols
It has retrieved
From bitterly grinded teeth
And swelling, bitten lips
A common evaluation
A rare, universal compliment
"It sucks."

Funny thing
How these same straight lip lines
That have just bursted profanity
Moments ago
Would start to unfurl into an unwilling smile
Welling up the strength to fight an extra mile
For this stupid thing named love
And those very angularly twisted eyes
That have just shot ruthless bullets
Moments ago
Would start to sparkle with adoration
For a faint silhouette of the imagination
While touring fruitlessly in a place called Lalaland
And strolling aimlessly on a road with no end
Never heeding to the meaning of circles
Until the screaming boys and girls down the hall
Brought one thought into the mind
Under the cursed spell of centripetal acceleration
Actually
Make that two thoughts
Jesus Christ I've been yapping away WAY TOO LONG and
Why do they never choose to close their doors

Love has mocked it all
Love has made the earth small
Love has watched everyone fall
Love has made the world crawl
But in the end
You gotta admit one thing
Love completes the melody of life
