All I See Is You (November 23, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

When I look out the window
All I see is the night
When I look up at the sky
I see stars shining bright
When I look into the river
All I see is still waters
All this time, through and through
All I see is you

When I look around the fields
All I see is a golden dream
When I look towards the mountain
I see hope; I see faith
When I look behind myself
I see laughters; I see tears
When I look for a clue
All I see is you

Every step I take
Every hand I shake
My heart would break
When I see your face
In every snowflake

Everyone I know
Everywhere I go
I'd picture you close
As tomorrow unfolds
As the wind blows

Scissors (November 3, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Cut cut cut snip
Snip snip snip cut
Certain memories
MUST
Be torn to pieces at once
With rough and careless fingers
Be slashed and smeared
With the icy edges of iron
Till millions of shreds
Are piled
Into a mud hill on the floor
No room for delay, regrets
And silent, salty drops

Cut cut cut snip
Snip snip snip cut
Certain memories
REFUSE
To boil elsewhere
Permanently melted and merged
And bonded and blended
Into a part of life
Which enshrines my highest beliefs
My scissors aren't fast enough
My scissors aren't strong enough
I can only sit and stare
And keep the scissors in my heart

. . . . .
. . . . .

I Used To Know This World Called Earth (October 28, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

I used to know this world called earth
Now I don't any more
I used to feel the power of love
Before it was drained drop by drop
From every meadow and creek
On the surface of this glob of rock
I used to stand in awe in front of justice
Exactly what was I thinking?!
I used to find strength in truth
I still do
But what the hell
Apparently it doesn't matter now
Truth is not as reliable as it used to be
It chokes and kills its owner
And soon
It will be wiped out entirely
And still only a few will see
Since no one else cares
Yeah
I used to know this world called earth
Now I don't any more

GACK! Not much time left for songs and poetic ramblings! University rawks in some ways though.

PLUS this! DANG! Last night I poured water over the A-S-Z-X section of my keyboard (not the musical instrument; the one that came with the computer) and now ALL the arrows except the UP one are on (looks like permanent) strike. Oh well! =)

Cookie Thoughts (September 19, 1998)
-> thanks to ABBA's Gold <-

An evergreen leaf
Floating across the sea
Will it always stay
That way?
Is the sunshine a safe place
To bestow all the wishes and beliefs
Upon, or is it just a palace
That exists only in dreams?

Are victories so addictive and sweet?
Are failures so bitter and permanent?
Enemies and friends--
An image mirrored from its reflection?
A barrier that nothing can overcome?
Love and hate--
Do they not have the same origin?
Do they not both sting?

Do angels still exist?
Do they still fly?
Do they still plant tender kisses
Upon little boys and girls' foreheads?

Or have I just been eating
Too many chocolate chip cookies
They are right in front of me
Things that I feel, taste, and see

Chocolate chip cookies must be delusional!

Pennies and Tidbits (August 31, 1998)

Eat less junk
Food; never flunk
Exams; know how to dunk
Your Dunkaroos in peanut butter; punk (the music)
Is weird but don't hate it; when you see a hunk
Chase after him but don't trip; avoid a skunk
Because it smells bad; Titanic had sunk
And Jack had died--accept it; don't get drunk
And always sleep on your own bunk

Crooked (August 30, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

A crooked night
A crooked moon
A jeering witch with a crooked broom

A crooked branch
A crooked leaf
A butterfly with crooked wings

A crooked path
A crooked mirror
A fairy land with a crooked river

A crooked world
A crooked style
A little girl with a crooked smile

A crooked pen
A crooked note
With which I wrote a crooked poem

The idea of writing this occurred to me after I woke up (but before I got up) and stared at the ceiling for a few minutes. Again it's not about any individuals (PLEASE do NOT assume that); I was using the addressing word "you" before but then I took it out. Even in the "you"-ful version, the "you" was indeed very much plural. And I just realized that I have been blabbing for this past few seconds. =)

Letting Me See (August 29, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

There was a time
When a clear sky was all there was to see
And a life so uncomplicated and carefree
The sun grinned at the earth everyday
And even if it rained
The raindrops were harmless and soothing
And troubles were instantly washed away
And then, it would be sunny again

I never knew what a storm was like
How unpredictable! What a fight!
How could the sky just cloud up in an instant
Without any signs of warning or cause
And proceed to slash out with madness
Becoming a madman with an unforeseen cruelty
How could the sun just vanish without a trace
When just a moment ago it still hung high
Shining pleasantly upon everything
Making the world a happy paradise

Caught unprepared, and without a place to hide
Never before had I seen a storm on a dark night
With such untamed violence
And such unnamed hostility
Aimed to darken anything brighter than itself

It was a day I would never forget
Not in a million years to come
It was on that day
That I saw a black sky for the first time
Saw its vicious, scathing temper
Capable of unreasonable hurt and destruction
Ready to tighten its merciless claws in any second
It was on that day
That I saw the uglier face of life
The hideous mask under which the devil lie
Hybernating till the breaking
Of another raging storm on another dark night
It was on that day
That I learned about hatred and gloom
In a world where trust has not enough room
And realized that ugly words did exist
In the dictionary, on numerous pages, too
And unfriendly phrases were being passed
Every day and every hour from delicate lips
And that wars do break out everyday
Even if there is not a molecule stirring
Keeping a perfect stillness on the surface

Yet I am glad I have seen the paradise first
I am glad I still know how to wait and hope
And when lost on sea, how to stay afloat
And when abandoned in darkness, how to grope
Because as long as the paradise
Is still somewhere out there
Darkness would not reign forever
And as long as the sun is still there
Just hiding somewhere behind the clouds
The sky would clear again
I know it would
Soon

This is for people in GENERAL. WARNING: unpleasant stuff ahead (someone should invent a trafic sign for that =)!

If (August 29, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

If you are gonna leave me in suspense
Then don't expect me to be considerate
Get used to my brutal logic and sense
In every guess I couldn't be accurate

If you are gonna blind me from the open
Then don't expect me to be always pleasant
One day I will finally get sick and tired
You will see the explosion and the fire

If you are gonna give me endless lies
Then don't expect me to keep the peace
Remember I am just a normal human
With a limited supply of patience

If you are gonna tell me the truth
Then don't expect me to wait forever
Speak out before my bus comes through
To pick me up and take me wherever

I just couldn't understand
Why truth doesn't work any more?
Since when has honesty ceased
To be a universal passport?

A song. I am getting too songish (is that a bad thing?) this week. =P Some words edited for music's sake. . .and I could REALLY use a better title. . .any suggestions?

The Road (August 26, 1998)
Music and Lyrics Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Snowflakes are descending
The world is dawning
At the horizon
Is the November sun

The dawn is breaking
People are stirring
At the horizon
Is the November sun

Looking at the November sun
A land of hope, dreams, and fun
Behind me, a world in shadows
Acres of darkness where the wind blows
Looking at the November sun
Snowflakes twirling with the current
Beneath me, a road among meadows
Leading away to the rainbows

If you will not go
Then I guess I should
I'll soon be on my way
Walking in the snow

If you will not go
Then I guess I should
For at least one of us
Has to take this road

A Promise (August 26, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

A promise you made to me
Is a pledge of faith
But people keep taking it away
Promises are so easy to break

How can I offer you my confidance
When you have breached that faith
Before, and your wary eyes
Are telling me enough in a glance?

I suddenly start to wonder today
Just how much of your promises
Made to me with every sincerity
Are you still keeping for me?

Alas, what is in a promise?
More vulnerable, more fragile
Than even the most exquisite glass
Easy to make, easier to break
