White Walls
Back to Full Index
There's been a thunderstorm outside for a while now, and I took the pains and the liberty (?) musing against the wall and came up with this. =)
White Walls (August 25, 1998)

To the person who's finally aided me to finish turning over the page.

White walls of a stormy night
Walls of strength, ignorant of fright
White walls of a stormy night
Never failing to stand upright
But when a thunderbolt
Cracks the furrowed brows of the sky
And then the raindrops
Attacks the garden below without mercy
Aren't you glad now
That the white walls are there
Holding up a second sky
More constant, protecting
And equally white
Taking the wet, cold, stinging blows
So you can escape the pain?
Aren't you glad now
That the white walls are there
Isolating a precious little corner
Away from the thunder, the rain, the cold
The frightening, intimidating darkness
And the rest of the world in chaos
Reserving a piece of paradise
With a burning fire and a glowing light
And perhaps a brandy to revive
Numbly frozen fingers and toes?
Shoulder by shoulder they stand motionless
Smiling down at the fortunate creature
Safe and sound underneath their stone umbrella
With a charming complaisance
They know not tiredness nor boredom
But keeping you safe and warm and dry
A sudden but soft knock
Disturbs the heavenly stillness
The rain is pouring outside
With a vigour as never before
The white walls turn their shining eyes
Upon you, as if silently inquiring
Do you have. . .?
Can you find. . .?
Will you spare. . .?
An extra glass of brandy in the cupboard
An extra wooden chair by the cozy fireside
For a rain-beaten stranger
Who has not yet found white walls
Of his own?
White walls of a stormy night
Battling calamity till its flight
White walls of a stormy night
Giving with all their might

I CAN look directly into your eyes
And murmur that everything's fine
And that I will smile
And be your friend
Like nothing has ever happened
If you force me to
If I must
I CAN wipe away all the tears from my face
And turn to you with a contented grin
Perfectly displayed across my cheek
And be calm, collected, and cool
Like nothing has ever happened
If you force me to
If I must
However
If you agree to listen to me
With neither a laugh nor a mock
Threatening to break loose
At any moment
I would tell you this:
But for now
Please just leave me alone
For a while
I am not ready
To be your friend yet
Not yet
Not when I still need to heal
Not when I still need to cry
In a dark, neglected little corner
So for now
Please go away
And remember
If the moment comes
When time will scrape away
The remaining traces of this pain
When seasons will smooth away
The endearing memories of this day
I will come and look for you
To complete the other half
Of this friendship

Sometimes I wonder if things were
The way you had described them to be
Or had you yet again set out to deceive
And I had gladly become your victim
Sometimes I wonder if you were
Worth all my efforts after all
Or should I have ignored everything
Since the beginning of this game
Now the sky is beginning to clear
Yet I still cannot see
What is hidden behind these clouds
Could it be the sun?
Or is it the moon?
Or is there nothing there
To be discovered at all?

The last stroke of my pen
Brought an end to a page
Full of words in every color
Size, style, and shape
I looked longingly at every character
I had so carefully crafted
With hate and love, tears and laughter
The artlessness of a first yet final draft
Now the time has come
For me to move on
To flip over a new page
That looks so inviting
And keep writing
With a new-born smile
Yet the graceful arc
Stopped in its mid-track
My hand trembled momentarily
My heart skipped a beat
A last glimpse of the page
Brought out a sentence I had left
Unfinished. . .
But I am sick and tired
Of being blind-folded for so long!
I stared at the page
My eyes landed on another sentence. . .
Just give it one more chance
Because only then you'll be ready
To walk away

Never thought
That the missing words
Would be filled so soon
There was no fanfares
Nor fireworks or balloons
But I am glad it came
In the end at least
Thank you
My dangling hand was relieved
Of its awkward, mid-air posture
My feet has once again gained
The solid assurance of the ground
The graceful arc continued its course
Slicing the air with confidence
Completing a gorgeous semi-circle
As I smoothed the new leaf
And breathed
Thank you
That was all I needed
To turn over the page

Down in the garden
Bloomed roses and forget-me-not's
That sweetened the air and inspired the earth
Every now and then
A bird would bestow a glance
At the simple beauty of the forget-me-not's
As it flew by
Every now and then
A bird would sing a melody
Praising the exquisite elegance of the roses
It would even stop by
And pay the admiration that is due
I stood in the middle of the garden
Alone, picking a flower for you
You wanted a rose
Had asked for a rose
Had preferred a rose over the forget-me-not's
You had said
A rose would make you happy
Yet a forget-me-not would not
You were so sure that I'd bring back a rose
I stood in the middle of the garden
Alone, picking a flower for you
Roses were rare
Roses could catch attention
Roses had all the beauty and sophistication
But maybe I liked the simpleness in the other
Maybe I valued the humbleness in the other
Although they were not roses
They were still pretty flowers
Just simpler
And wouldn't sting as much
I stood in the middle of the garden
Alone, picking a flower for you
Bending down with a determination
I picked up a forget-me-not

It used to be a cloudy sky
And sometimes a stormy night
A voice cries out with all its might
For it senses the turbulence around
Too many things left unquestioned
Too many questions left unanswered
Too many answers left unheard
Neglected and hidden untouched
Now as confusion clears away
As the clouds parts
I begin to see the sunshine
That's been hidden from me
For all this time
And to feel a gush of warmth
Surging through my veins
As it unlocks my heart
I have not much left to describe
Except the fixed shapes of facts
And the solid interiors of truths
I have not much left on my mind
That induces sleepless nights
And thousands of heart-aches
I have finally found the truth
Discovered the root of it all
Everything that has been plaguing
My precious sense of direction
Yes, I have discovered the truth
A wonderful, sad truth told
By only three, simple words
All that needs to be said is said
All that is meant to be heard is heard
So I have nothing better to offer
But a temporary silence

Tonight
There is not a star to be seen
Twinkling in the velvety sky
There is not a song to be heard
Chiming in the chilling wind
Where have the stars gone?
Why have the songs muted?
When has the moon taken on
Such a pale, pathetic glow?
I hear only a deafening silence--
The silence of the night
I see only a blinding darkness--
The darkness of the night
Not just any other night
Tonight

I think I know what the world would be
without the cold and without the night
I think I see what the world holds for me
From another corner, in a different light
I think I have the courage finally
To wipe away tears and face this test
I think I will always look for the sun
Smile away the pain and hope for the best
Waiting for that day
When darkness runs away
Hoping it won't be long
My faith is still strong
Never stop hoping
Never stop trying
You gotta keep running
Till the end of time
Never stop fighting
Never stop loving
You gotta keep smiling
Till the end of time
I never knew what it's like to be
An eagle that flies so high in the sky
I never saw through the mask of the world
To be able to see its endless lies
I never had the chance to hold you
Take your hands and yell I love you
Life has been rough, and time has been tough
But I kept going and now I came through
An end of a long run
A beginning to move on
A road leading to the sun
That is where I belong
Never stop hoping
Never stop trying
You gotta keep running
Till the end of time
Never stop fighting
Never stop loving
You gotta keep smiling
Till the end of time

A feather
Lighter than snowflakes
Soaks up the golden rays
Of the glowing sun
Dancing to the waltz
Of the breathless wind
Touching the earth
Touching the sky
Touching the raindrops
And everything in sight
A feather
Softer than a whisper
Glides through the world
With a careless ease
Tickling the spring breeze
Playfully with her slender fingers
Hiding in the clouds
Hiding among the stars
Hiding on a rainbow
And away from broken hearts
A feather
Innocent as a child
Knows no worries to stop her
From reaching up
To the highest point in the sky
A feather
Naive and guileless
Sees no troubles to keep her
From looking up
With the sweetest smile in her eyes
If a feather knows
Only perfection and happiness
Will he be able to
Live through the world's madness?
Can he ever survive
The cruel games of a thunder storm?
If he is beaten once
Can he ever reach up and fly again?
Can he ever stand
The sight of the darker side of the sea
Unpredictable, unmanageable, untameable
And keep soaring
Through the sea's rage with dignity
Defeating the angry, engulfing gushes
With the courage of a fighting sea gull
And re-emerge
At the end of his battle
As a winner?
