The Battle Against Ourselves (July 23, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

I have played the game
I have accepted the quest
I have spoken the truth
I have tried my best
To be a silent, cloudless mirror
A one-sided piece of glass
That can be easily shattered
But reflects the day as the day
The night as the night
You as you
And me hidden inside

I have brushed away the lies
I have shaken off the misunderstandings
I have seen through the disguises
I have made a mistake since the beginning
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less travelled by

I tried to replenish the Sea of Faith
That was once, too, at the full

And to a patch of spilt milk
I gave yet another underserved chance

Then one day
I would cease to care
The patience exhausted
The effort gone
The passion frozen
The will ceased to fight
I would surrender
I would withdraw
I would give up
I would take the easier road
And run away from the fakeness
The meaninglessness
And the absurdness
Of this world, a world where
Ignorant armies clash by night
I would put on a grinning mask
And pretend to see the world
In a perfect shade of white
In a disgustingly perfect shade of white
A shade of white that everyone likes
And envies and curses and hates
Because only a Kodak film
Possesses the perfect shade of white

And everyone owns a noname brand
Namelessly common
But perfectly practical for the day
I would put on a pretty dress
And pretend to be a Barbie Girl
So I could live in a Barbie World
Where life is fantastic
Because it is all just plastic

And then
What's left on the battlefield
Is our own wisdom
Against our own wit
I just hope
For the sake
Of the once existed
Love and prosperity
Friendship and flare
Now all washed away
By the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery

As time flew past
As time flies on
That this day
Will not come
Too soon

**IMPORTANT ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: this poem DOES contain allusions to several well-known items (all italicized) which include Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach," Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken," AQUA's newest release BARBIE GIRL, and the Kodak film commercial from a while back**

A song-to-be. . .

But A Dream (July 18, 1998)
lyrics Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

The journey of life
Promises many surprises
Some happy
Some sad
But all were meant to be

The day I met you
A fairy tale has begun
With you
With me
But none was meant to be

The night you left me
As silently as you came
I cursed
I cried
Why did it end this way?

Life does not only
Promise just one tale
Keep living
Keep loving
A new one has just begun

Why oh why

Did the fairy tale even have to begin
That set flames burning from within?
After all that we had, after everything
Did you and I have nothing but a dream?

Friendship (July 8, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Friendship
Is a funny thing
Wonderful
Magical
Unpredictable
And I am talking to one
Right now
And wondering
Just wondering

How do two people
Two complete strangers
Come along the same way
And develope this bond
Called friendship?

How do these two, then
Possibly, two persons
Of completely opposite nature
Maintain this bond
And always keep it safe
From external harm

How do these two, then
Increase the bond strength
With such confidence
That they would give unconditionally
No matter which way the earth spins
That they would never be apart
Because their bond would never break

How do these two, then
Eventually manage
To have the strength
And the heart
To pull this bond apart
And destroy it utterly

What happened to the promises?
What happened to the faith?
What happened to the friendship?
And to the two friends?
But most of all
If neither of the two wanted it to
Why did it have to end that way?

The following is a half serious half joke poem dedicated to the six glorious members of IMO Team Canada (RAWK ON!!!) plus all my mathie (definition?? nah =) friends out there. Remember, the ultimate logo is -- GO MATHIES!

I-M-O (July 8, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

I-M-O are
Letters of intelligence
Letters of beauty
Letters of darn courage
Letters of friendship

I-M-O is
The only way to conquer
Barriers between one another
The only way to bring
You and I together

Through I-M-O
We find the only unbreakable bond
Through I-M-O
Our strength is growing strong
Through I-M-O
Our passion for math will last long
Through I-M-O
Our friendship will forever live on

Another of my "songs." This is already a revised edition; however, the music still doesn't fit the words snuggly enough! ACK! =)

Counting the Drops of Rain (July 7, 1998)
lyrics and music Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Another night of loneliness
Another night of pain
Another night that I spent
Meaninglessly
Counting the drops of rain

Never wanted you to leave
Never wanted to cry
Never wanted an empty night
When I'd end up
Counting the drops of rain

Oh look, tonight the rain is setting in
And I find the truth deep within
As I begin to see through the pain
As I begin counting the drops of rain

Although I had sworn
To forget about you
You are still there
Always in my mind
Whenever I ask myself
Do I still love you?
I'd look out the window
And see for myself

Oh look, tonight the rain is setting in
And I find the truth deep within
As I begin to see through the pain
As I begin counting the drops of rain

This is a song I wrote, dedicated to all the friends around the world, especially mine. =) You all rock!!!

Friends (first draft on July 2; final copy produced on July 3)
lyrics and music Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Remember me
My friend
For I still do
Remember you

Forgive me
My friend
For I have long ago
Forgiven you

Where is your smile
And where is mine
Where is the dream
We once had

Forget the pain
Forget the pride
Forget that rainy day
When we went each's way

Friends for life
Is not just a legend
If we really try
If we really try

We finally found
What we have lost
So don't let it go
So don't let it go

This was my first attempt at writing songs. It came out, but the music is kinda naive. Funny, I guess I just wanted to write something that remotely resembled a song. This is really for no one in particular although some of you still don't believe me. =P And I still think that it is better off just as a poem instead of a song. =)

I'd like to dedicated my first song to Jess (okie, clarification here, this is one of my two best friends in this world =). Thanx for putting up with all my *ahem* rambles. . .=)

Say You Love Me (June 29, 1998)
words and music Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

Gazing at the sky
And I see your face
The moon lights up your eyes
The stars sing your grace
Another shooting star
Falls out of the place
Another wish from my heart
Dies without a trace

For so long
You've always been there
And when you're gone
I missed your voice
Chances are
Our endless search is over
Because you and I
Together, we'll make darkness bright

Say you love me
And angels will cry
Say you love me
To the stars up high
Say you love me
So you will be mine
Say you love me
So you will always be mine

Where Has the Innocence Gone (June 26, 1998)
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.

I thought I could remain a child forever
And be the happiest person in the world
I thought I could love without any worries
And never let any boy break my heart
I thought I could keep the world
Forever perfect and spotless and loving
I thought I could understand all its people
Because everyone is honest and caring
I thought life would go on and on
Without anything ever going wrong
I thought everyone would live happily ever after
But life has its own ups and downs

Leaving (June 22, 1998)
- A Goodbye To A Beloved One -
Copyright (c) 1998 Yifan Zhu. All Rights Reserved.
(Many thanx to JaNEdOE's Endurance for inspiration, Celine Dion's The Power of Love for the mood, and lastly. . .(*ahem* explicit name-mentioning kinda-mushy dedication snipped for the sake of all =P however the poem IS for SOMEone but no more inquiries please! =). . .and Jess: remember my "official declaration"? =P

I am leaving
I am giving you up
I am letting go of your hand
I am walking away
Yes
I am leaving
I am tired
Of endless chasing
Of playing games
Of meaningless promises
Of shattered dreams
I've had enough of you
So I have to go
Yes
I am leaving
But this time
I won't look back
I won't regret
I won't say one more word
I won't shed one more tear
Yes
I am leaving
I am leaving you behind
There will not be
Another next time
When you find me
Waiting at your door
Holding out my heart
Next time
When you open the door
You will not find me there
I will be gone
Far away
So I will never see you again
So you will never see me again
Yes
I am leaving
For good

The following poem is directly inspired from another poem. Again, it was not dated.

Untitled - inspired from an Anonymous' poem

Look up at the moon in the darkened sky
Gaze deep into the starry night
Do you see his eyes watching them too
Maybe wandering to the days gone by

You try to clench your fists tight
You try to shut him out of the sight
But the tears are not enough to dim
His star that still shines so bright

Wishing it were as simple as some would say
Wishing you knew how to make it stay
But when all love brings you is misery
Turn back before your heart loses its way
