WISHING YOU WERE HERE

it’s so dark
   inside and out
rain is pouring
   outside and in

whether i’m here or there
doesn’t matter where i been
i feel it everywhere

wish you were here
   to blow away the clouds
they’re hanging so low
   inside and out

wish you were here
to bring light to the rain
so i could have rainbows
outside and way, way deep in.

the blues are outside and inside
   i feel inside out
because
   my heart’s on the table
   beating slow
doesn’t matter where i go
i feel it everywhere
whether i’m here or there
i’m wishing you were here

WISHING YOU WERE HERE
Written August 11, 1980
Inspiration
This poem is about hanging on the edge of feeling sad and feeling numb from feeling so much sadness.
When there is so much hurt inside a person, it seems to surround their body inside as well as exude outside
and spill over into their every day behaviors.  This is why "my heart's on the table / beating slow," similar to
the saying that someone wears their heart on their sleeve.  There is just too much sadness and longing and
the feelings just can't be contained.
