WHAT TOMORROW HOLDS

When I can say
    what tomorrow holds,
When I can stop looking back,
you’ll be the first to know.

Yet, I ask:  will you be there?

When I can trust my heart
    in your hands,
When I can love again
    and believe in a friend,

Will you be there?

I cannot promise you
    more than just today.
But if I leave open the door
    will you stay?

Will you be here?

It is not fair to ask
for more than I can give,
this I know.
I don’t have the right
to hold you so tight
and ask you to let me go.

Yet I ask:  must you know what tomorrow holds?

WHAT TOMORROW HOLDS
Written June 1996
Inspiration
My boyfriend-now-husband constantly wanted reassurances
that I would stay with him, but after several relationship breakups,
I just couldn't commit. At the same time, I wanted him to commit to
me and just give me a little space and a little time. He gave me that,
was patient, and I ended up falling so deeply in love with him that we
were married.
