THEN YOU

I fell down
and I felt down,
Stumbled on the hill,
Tripped and laid there still,
Face in the dirt,
Bruises on my heart,
Knocked the wind out,
Couldn’t cry, couldn’t shout

Then you
    held my hand
Then you
    dusted off the sand
Then you
    helped me stand
Then you
    couldn’t stay
Then you
    turned away!

I stood up
and I felt up,
Was King on the hill,
And I am there, still,
Face to the sky!
But no one hears me cry,
     Trying to reach out,
     Empty echoes when I shout

Then you
    turned deaf to my screams
Then you
    stopped appearing in my dreams
Then you
    forgot what love means
Then you
became what you had to be
Then you
    meant nothing to me.

THEN YOU
Written March 2, 1996
Inspiration
Abandoned by a boyfriend who was helping me through a rough period, I wrote about the sudden betrayal. It ends with personal strength through letting go, in the end, he "meant nothing to me."
