SISTER

Through a field of poppies,
And through all youthful days,
Through boyfriends
and weddings
and divorces
and our own babes.

Together for birthday candles,
And a new sister and new brother,
Fun pages,
dance crazes,
And sad funeral for mother.

Road trips, singing lips,
We shared blankets and clothes.
We shared homework
and housework
and toys
and highs and lows.

She’s there for me, and I for her,
Whenever we need to laugh or cry.
Doesn’t matter where we are,
Inside of me,
she’s always nearby.

Inspiration
I came across the photo for this poem and it brought such nice memories of my little sister.  We are running through a field of poppies in Spain, 1974.  "Fun Pages" is a game that we used to play...you write a story on the left side of a piece of paper and put blank lines on the right side, then fold it in half.  The other person fills in the blanks, you open the story, and read it and laugh at the final result.
