REMAIN IN THE DEEP

Awoke from the dream,
wanted to remain in the deep
Must we refrain
from the hopes that we keep?

Opened our eyes,
Now, where are we?
Don’t know this place
But I know the smile on your face

What was yesterday
has become far away,
what is real today
I cannot even say

But I can say,
Can I tell you it’s cold out today?
Can I call, because
I call for you in my sleep.
Can I pray?
Because I want back yesterday

Awoke from the dream,
wanted to remain in the deep
won’t ever be the same
It’s always you that I need.
What was real yesterday,
has now become far away
Will I be o.k.?
I cannot even say.

REMAIN IN THE DEEP
Written April 1996
Inspiration
A boyfriend broke up with me and one morning I simply did not want to get out of bed.  I wanted to keep sleeping, keep dreaming, and "remain in the deep."  Many of my poems come to me with a melody behind them, and this one was inspired by Seal's "Rose on a Grave."
