GROWING UP

I had to sleep
    without a bed
I had to think
    the veriest sadest thoughts
    in my head.

I had to stand alone
    in the night
I had to learn alone
    what is right

I had to cry
    on my own shoulder
I had to be
    too much older . . .
    I’m fourteen, going on twenty-two,
    and all these things
    I still must do
I had to go through time
    In a grown-up world
    that wasn’t mine.

Inspiration
I was 14 when I wrote this.  I was living with my mother and sister, and for the dozenth time I had no bed.  Mom was a bit of a travelling hippie, and although I love her dearly, being her daughter meant living with a non-conformist!  The joke is that I became the "white sheep" of the family, because I turned out so normal!
