CRY IN THE SUNLIGHT

As you reach into
the deep unknown
and see that you can’t find
what you thought should be there,
     Will you at least
     find yourself?
     Do you dare?

As you crawl down
the corridors in your brain
afraid to stand up
afraid to be seen
At each room you shut off the lights,
     don’t want to “be.”
     Where have you been?

If you could cry in the sunlight,
   would it sear your soul?
If you let everyone see your pain,
   would thunder roll?
would it be your death toll?

Realness might be a long, dull pain,
     But it’s something.
It might blanket your cold,
It might rest your distressed soul.

CRY IN THE SUNLIGHT
Written December 12, 1994
Inspiration
Sometimes we have to come to grips with our pain and share it.  "If you could cry in the sunlight" means exposing
your tears and your pain to other human beings.  "Would it sear your soul?" asks you to think about how much
it would hurt to share your pain...would it hurt at all?  The poem ends by reminding you that "Realness might be a
long, dull pain, / But it's something."  In other words, the numbness can be replaced by tears, and healing will follow.
