ALREADY GONE
One day you’re here
   and then, you’re not
One day a dot-com
   next day just a dot

You see - I’m already gone
I’ll say, Hello, to mom

Angels, flowers, and flags
Funeral’s such a drag
He’s already gone

Where did all the dreams go –
Snuffed out in the ashtray
   we can’t count on tomorrow
   make it happen today

You see - I’m already gone
He’s already gone,
Gazing at his shell
there’s no one really home
Dude, Already gone

Why am I tortured in this mess
you just fake your happiness
First pregnant and full, full of life
then cancer or gun or knife

You see - I’m already gone
He’s already gone,
   Gazing at his shell
Is he in heaven or hell
   Dude, Already gone

Bless the survivors, and if you can’t,
Bless the wicked and ignorant
Blessings to you and unto me
Who cares, gonna die, then we’re free

ALREADY GONE

Inspiration
My friend & coworker, Denis, suffered a tragic loss with the swift loss of his father to cancer that galloped throughout his body.
This poem was written at the height of the dot-com bubble, this is why the poem begins, "One day you're a dot-com / the next day just a dot."

After his father died, I thought about how my father refuses to go to cemetaries.  "Why should I look at my brother's shell,
he's already gone.  His car was also one of his shells, I'm not gonna stand in front of his car and mourn, either."  So my father's words
about being "already gone" came to me after this death.

The reason we should go to funerals is to support the family and friends as they go throught their mourning process:
"Bless the survivors, and if you can't / Bless the wicked and ignorant."  So just god bless everyone, why get wrapped up in funerals
and flags and processions, just go to the funeral, give your support and your blessings, because in the end,
"Who cares, gonna die, then we're free."
