The spaciously planned and developing town of Karlovac
( 59,469 inhabitants, 2001) lies
near the highway running from Zagreb to the Adriatic port of
Rijeka. Passing motorists see only the recently built parts of
the town and get no impression of its earlier character as a
typical Habsburg garrison town. During the Habsburg area the
town was known as Karlstadt - the German name for Karlovac.
Karlovac is famous for its old town, which contains a number
of handsome old burghers' houses in Renaissance and Baroque
style.
