How, why, & when did you begin designing?
I began designing in the mid 1980's. At the time, sculpted crochet items,
such as hats, fans, baskets etc sold well at the local church bazaar in my
home town. Trying to find those types of patterns was hard. Out of
frustration, I started designing my own.
What types of things do you design?
I prefer to design baskets, doilies, fans, hats, items that are sculpted
or 3 dimensional.
What has been your most favorite type of crochet/design work?
I'd say designing in sets. I love the idea of matching sets and in
sculpted crochet, it's almost impossible to find. I think my most
popular set is the Mom's Pineapple Set which includes a hat, basket
and fan.
What motivates you to design?
Almost everything. I have so many ideas I'm not sure if I'll ever have
the opportunity to design them all. But I can see or hear a short
phrase or see an item made in a different medium or craft, or just
a combination of things that will trigger my imagination.
What do you feel is your greatest achievement thus far?
I think starting a business in selling my designs. I never
thought I could do it. It was with my husband's encouragement that
I started selling over the internet at all.
Where do you see your designing going?
I'd like to see my site become more recognized for thread crochet
patterns. Not just a homesite or a hobby site, but a professional site.
I'd like to branch out as I continue to grow to include other's designs
as well as my own. I'd also like to be to produce magazines once
again. My other goal is to submit more patterns to publishers.
Do you have avenues which you would like to explore craft wise?
Getting patterns published by major publishers and publishing my own magazine
to be sold in chain stores across the country. Not sure if these are just dreams
though *lol* I would like to learn other forms of needleart such as tatting. I have
the old fashioned shuttle, but the instructions I tried were either poor or I was too dense!
How do you think the Internet has affected your designing efforts?
The different crochet list are a major role in designs I've created. Also if it hadn't
been for them I'd still be designing in one medium, thread. I've now branched out
to include more yarn projects which are a treat!
How do you see the Internet in your designing future?
As a means to continue to sell my designs online. I'm sure as more
families purchase pcs for their homes, it will open the market for
potential sales as well as a means to learn crochet or any other form
of art.
