He also played in another punk band, The Limp Richerds, together with Steve Turner who also played in Ducky Boys with Stone Gossard, if you follow? Mr Epp released some tapes and a 7" EP: "Of Course Iīm Happy Why?". An Epp "greatest hits" compilation called "Ridiculing The Apocalypse" has been released on Steve Turnerīs label Super Electro and can be bought via Sub Pop. In ī83 Steve Turner joined Mr Epp after Ducky Boys split up in ī83 and when Epp split up in 1984 Turner and Arm form Green River with Alex Vincent from Spluii Numa and Jeff Ament from Derranged Diction, the original line-up being: Mark Arm: vocals/guitar Steve Turner: guitar Jeff Ament: bass Alex Vincent: drums They named themselves after the Green River serial killings. With this line-up they recorded the demo "Swallow My Pride" which up until 1996 could only be found as a bootleg. It was recently released on the soundtrack of the movie "HYPE!"(Sub Pop 1996). In December 1984 Stone Gossard joined the band on guitar so that Mark Arm could concentrate on his singing. The same month they recorded their debut album wtih Chris Hanzsek, "Come On Down" for the New York label Homestead. It was released in the summer, but didnīt make much noise. Some say it was overshadowed by Dinosaur Jr.s first album. I havenīt heard that, but I donīt think they really attracted the same audience. In the autumn of ī85 they had two tracks, "10,000 things" and "Your Own Best Friend" on the compilation "Deep Six" (C/Z 1985). After recording "Come On Down" they stayed in New York for a while playing at different punkclubs such as the famous CBGBs where they were īdiscoveredī by former Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry who for a while wanted to produce them. Soon after the album was released Steve Turner quit the band and was replaced by Bruce Fairweather. They returned to Seattle and in June ī86 they recorded their second EP "Dry As A Bone". It was produced by Jack Endino at Reciprocal Recordings, the would-be standard procedure for most of the Seattle bands. At this time there was a Seattle fanzine, Subterranean Pop which included a cassette with american underground music in every issue. The publisher Bruce Pavitt had also released a compilation LP called "Sub Pop 100", and was now now trying to finance two more releases, "Dry As A Bone" and Soundgardenīs debut album "Hunted Down". Together with Treeclimbers-guitarist Jonatan Poneman he started Sub Pop, and in June 1987 they managed to issue the albums. The next month Green River started working on their first full length album album "Rehab Doll" with Jack Endino at Reciprocal. But in August they changed locations to Steve Lawson Studios and Bruce Calder took over as producer. In January ī88 the album was finished but by then the band had already split up. The reason was ethics, half the band wanted a major label deal and the other half wanted to stay on Sub Pop and maintain the bandīs punk ideals. This issue had always been around, but it wasnt until the summer of ī87 that it became critical. At a gig at the Scream Club in Los Angeles Mark Arm wanted some backstage passes for his friend only to discover that Jeff Ament had emptied their supply by giving tickets to some A&R men who didnīt even show up. Mark Arm left the band and that was the end, at least for Green River. Mark Arm teamed up with Steve Turner, Matt Lukin from Melvins and Dan Peters from Bundle Hiss and they started Mudhoney. The others in the band except for Alex Vincent contanted Andrew Wood from Malfunkshun and formed Mother Love Bone in march ī88. When Wood died of an overdose thay started playing in Pearl Jam with Eddie Vedder. In 1993 Arm and Turner joined Gossard and Ament for two Green River songs during a Pearl Jam encore.
