My guess is it's the result of the Matrix. It has a bit of a swirly quality to it. Like a bad mp3. -CRMASS ___________________________________________________________ General Notes: Bill Koucky contacted me about doing a matrix of the 12-27-82, and since he had an uncirculating AUD copy of this night (12-28-82), I decided to do this one as well so as to have a pair of volumes (18a and 18b). This show is much different from the previous night, so the two together give a nice snapshot of the band during their 5 night '82 New Year's run at what later would become the Kaiser. The first set feature's a tasty song selection with 1 of 7 On The Road Again's of '82 (only 2 more were played subsequently) that segues into only the 9th ever Touch Of Grey (midset!). The LSD ending of set 1 foreshadows a powerful 2nd set which closes with a stunning Morning Dew followed by a fitting double encore. This show is a fan favorite for '82. The Miller PCM SBD is a vast improvement over the previous night's SBD, yet the FOB AUD isn't nearly as good, thus this matrix is heavier in the SBD than the 27th. Thanks to whomever for recording the AUD, and to Bill Koucky and Chris Ladner for transferring, encoding and remastering it. Thanks to Charlie Miller for the killer PCM SBD. Special thanks to Bill Koucky for motivating me to matrix both nights. Artwork by Zman - thanx! Enjoy! Chappy ___________________________________________________________ Editing Notes: - Pitch The SBD was relatively close in pitch so I left it as is and pitched the AUd down about 30 to 40 cents for set 1; and for set 2 8 to 12 cents prior to Space; post Space the AUD was pitched down about 12 to 22 cents, except for Baby Blue which is from a different source, since it was played 10 mins. after the lights had come on (taper's scramble) and had to be pitched up about 11 to 13 cents. - Synch Because of the speed fluctuation within a given source, multiple edits were performed to keep the sources synched. Since the SBD was my master pitch and time ref, the AUD was synched to the SBD (too many edits to list). - Sonic Quality/Matrix ratio The SBD was left as is, but the AUD had some hiss and needed some mild EQ (-2db shelf at 3kHz). I also applied (very sparingly) Waves L2 (limiter) to the master 2 buss to keep things contained, the levels rarely hitting zero, thus the limiting is quite scarce. All I was trying to do here is to add some dimension to the SBD by using the ambience of the AUD. The result is a lively but clear recording, hopefully close to how it sounded at the show. If I had to guess the SBD/AUD ratio would be somewhere between 3:1 and 2:1. - Edits The following are places where the SBD and AUD had splices, holes or incomplete coverage in reference to the final matrix timeline. There are false starts in the beginngs of both sets during tunnings. Pauses between most tunes in first set. Levels adjusted up during Jack Straw Uneven levels for second set were left low in DAT to CD transfer but are ok for 1st set. During jam before Throwing Stones (d3t03 00:15-00:18) it seems that the eq button was popped and then set back causing more hiss for about 5 seconds. This tape has been with me pretty much since I went to these shows I got it while living in Berkeley from the guy who taped the show and listened to it for years until the sbds came out. It really captures the sound of the arena and of the show that night. Jerry blows the lyrics to SHakedown and Terrapin but the playing is great as they are working out Throwing Stones and the Morning Dew is one of my favorites. Double Encore after the lights came back on was a first and only tme for me.
