Jim's deck needed a hospital visit after the festival! Notes from Jim: It was really an "event" being there this year. The buzz that surrounded Bob's return to Newport was incredible, from the build-up in the newspapers the week before to the atmosphere there that day. Unlike any Newport Folk I have been to in the past, and I have gone to most since '89. I recorded the show from about 20-30 feet in front of the stage, so it was kind of mayhem, with people pushing and shoving for position, but it was a blast and I'm glad I was able to catch it live. I'm not sure if it has been cut out now, but after Watchtower you can hear the reaction of the group of friends I was with and a few others that were around us...we were blown away! Sorry for the cut going into Blowin' In The Wind, but he was scheduled to play 90 minutes, from 5:30 to 7:00, so I was using a 2 hour tape. He came on a half hour late and played until about 8:15 so I had to change tapes (very discreetly) mid-set. For those who have not been there, they run a tight ship in terms of the artists' timing, so for him to come on late and to play an extra 45 minutes was very rare. In fact, when we were all standing around waiting for him, we expected that they would still hold him to the 7:00 end time, so that we would only get a one hour set. Security was tighter than I have ever seen it there, with no photos allowed and multiple announcements that anyone seen taping would be immediately ejected. The sense of high security was made even more intense because Gore was there sitting on the side of the stage, so security was beefed up for that. Someone who knows the organizers also told me that Dylan had insisted that the backstage area be cleared of all other artists etc before his arrival so that he had the entire backstage to himself. He still does things his own way! I'm sure that most if not all of you have seen the wig and fake beard by now..what was that all about??? Sorry to ramble on, but I wanted to share some of the story as well as the recording. It was really a blast being there. Newport Folk, Dylan or no Dylan, is a fantastic event and I would highly recommend going.
