Is Utah's rate higher than the national average?

Utah's divorce rate is usually slightly higher than the national average. Utah's rate has in the past been significantly higher than the national average, particularly during the 1940s and 1950s. But since 1970, Utah's rate has averaged just 4% above the national rate.

Figure 1 shows the divorce rates for Utah and the United States. Rates are the number of divorces and annulments per 1,000 residents.

How does Utah's rate compare to the rest of the country?

Table 1 shows how Utah's rate compares to the rest of the states. A rank of 1 indicates the highest rate. The rates for Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York are included for comparison with the claim from mazeministry.com. The rate for the Western U.S. is included for comparison with the claim from John L. Smith.

The following statistics are reported by Adherents.com.

"The divorce rate for Mormons who marry within their faith is 13% after five years, compared to 20% for Catholics and Protestants, and 27% for Jews. Among LDS couples who marry in a temple, the divorce rate is only 5.4% for men and 6.5% for women -- lower than any other social or religious group in the United States that has been studied.

"However the divorce rate for Mormons who marry non-Mormons is 40%, the second highest among interfaith combinations studied."
