Squirrely Boy
This was an interesting aquisition. The guys found him while they were roofing this winter and he didn't even have his eyes open. He was only about 4 inches long in the body and when he was hungry he would shreik these awful squeaks to let me know he needed fed. He is a funny lil thing like having a rat/monkey on your hands because he is very busy and always into something....Another of my biting lil friends.... *****Update***** My squirrel has been set loose as of August 19, 2003. I believed it was time for him to enjoy the freedom God gave him. I will always cherish the time he spent in my care and will always look to the trees for him. We forget sometimes the gift the Lord gave us when he gave us animals. I pray he has a good life and makes many more lil squirrels. *********************************************** I was thinkin' about this critter the other day. My little girl was down for a visit and I decided it was time for her to learn to sew. I gave her the supplies and she says I am gonna make a pillow for squirrel. Sure, I thought, why not. She took her time carefully cutting it out and when it was done we gave it to squirrely. He took it, graciously, then....proceeded to tear open one side of it to get to the stuffing. He left the cover off to the side and ran of to his nest. She shrieked. I said honey its ok, its what he needed. We can always make another. Poor thing. Bet we never forget her fiirst sewing project.

Squirrel Diary~ 26 Feb 2003 Critter day! This afternoon I found a box turtle. My friend found a baby squirrel in the roof they were working on. The poor thing doesn't even have its eyes open. I got a kitten bottle and formula and I am going to have to feed her every two hours. ***Do NOT use a bottle to feed your squirrel or small animal baby. Eye droppers are best as the animal will take too much of the formula (Kitten Replacement Formula) in and the excess will come back out the nose and then be breathed back to the lungs setting them up for respiratory problems or even pneumonia. Also, no terry cloth materials. Their tiny toes can catch in the loops and easily be broken. These entries are for future nannies of mother nature. If you use my diary to care for your critter, I have made the efforts to provide you with the best info I have found to date. 3 Mar 2003 The baby squirrel is a BOY! hee hee and I changed his name from Suzie Q. To Zues. He is growing fast, a VERY! busy baby. 9 Mar 2003 Zues is growing bigger every day. He started drinking only 5 ml of milk a day now he is up to about 15 ml. He is strong and healthy. It is nice to see him do well. 12 Mar 2003 I'm up early today. Zues, my baby squirrel, woke up about 7:45 a.m. this morning. He is starving ALL THE TIME! 19 Mar 2003 The squirrel was acting listless yesterday. He wasn't eating much so we took him to a pet store that has a free clinic. The doctor looked him over and said he was fine. He gave him a deworming medicine and asked me to bring him back in a couple of weeks. 23 Mar 2003 The squirrel got lost this morning. He climbed out of his cage through one of the feeder cups. I looked all over , checked the cats, the dog. No one found him. I had my chow smell the little blanket he uses and she walked over to the bed and just stood there. He had crawled into the bed and was curled up bethween the comforter and the sheets. Silly Critter! Somewhere in here I need to note something about the animals and how they reacted to the baby squirrel. I had three cats and a chow dog and they, though curious about the baby, kept their distance. The cats knew he was a biter so they respected his space. One of my cats had a sense of humor about him though. Angus, my male cat would lay on his cage and while trying to find a comfy spot to lay down, Zues would nip his feet. One day when we had just gotten the squirrel I was feeding him and upon returning him to the bird cage I kept him in Angus was laying in the cage and looking up at me like he was smiling. I roared. Silly Cat! 06 Apr 2003 Thursday, Zues was wormed, again. He is really playing silly lately. He is a lot of fun. He just flips and flips and scampers around. 18 May 2003 My squirrel is growing bigger all the time. He's a silly little thing. Loves to play and likes to bite, I hate that. I love letting him run loose. He gets crazy wrestling with my hands. I swear he could play for days. Silly, wonderful Zues! 2 Sept 2003 This was not in my journal, but sometime after this date I had to free my squirrel. He had become a major biter and was a royal nuisance. He climbed over my face one morning and his sharp claws cut my nose. When a male squirrel finally has his tail filled out they turn into menaces. They are not ideal pets, though some have had success with them in keeping them homebound it's best to set them free. I miss the days Zues would jump in the bag of Reese's miniature cups and sneak off to unwrap his prize. My daughter was visiting me for a couple of days and he didn't like her for some reason. He had bitten her pretty good on the thumb and then he bit her on the back. That was all I could take of this behavior and I set his cage outside and let him have his freedom. He came back for his blanket and the kids saw him in a tree way high up, but thats the last of Zues's story. The silly squirrel. Summary: Feed baby with eyedropper. Kitten Replacement Formula When eyes open feed them parrot mix and healthy stuff. (Veggies Fruit now and then) Use flannel cloth for "blankies" Plenty of water (bird bottles are good for this) Give them things to chew for their nest's Keep the cage clean.
