The Talented Mr. Ripley was a classy, sophisticated and really creepy movie. The atmosphere of it all is just amazing. Gabriel Yared composed the wonderful score, which is peppered by some fantastic jazz; the soundtrack features the International Trio. (See my review of the soundtrack.) This movie really leaves you with a creepy feeling. It starts out in New York, where Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) works as a janitor. Herbert Greenleaf, a rich New York socialite, asks Ripley to track down his son Dickie (Jude Law...hot!!) who refuses to return home from Italy.
Upon arriving in Italy, however, Ripley becomes obsessed with Dickie's life of glamour and privilege. In fact, he will stop at nothing to be Dickie in every way. He started out pretending to be one of Dickie's old friends from law school, but Ripley in no way stops there. When asks what his talents were, he replied, "Forging signatures, telling lies and impersonating almost anyone." I don't want to reveal anymore about the movie, except to tell you that it is an amazing movie that is in no way boring. (It runs 140 minutes.) It really turns you around, I found myself unsure as to which side to root for. Sure, Ripley is amoral and deceitful, but I found myself not wanting him to be caught. The movie really takes you away and elicits a lot of emotional response.
