Thirteen Ghosts

Rated: R
Starring: Mathew Lillard
Genre: Horror
Released: 2002
Length: 90 min

Another entry into the modern and mediocre horror bin. This one is a bit better than some of the real big budget schlockers that have been released the last few years (think House on Haunted Hill, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer). A movie with a decent idea, a wealthy man takes it upon himself to begin collecting ghosts so that he may perform some ancient ritual (Always with the ancient rituals, what's up with that?) that opens up the eye of hell. Ok, that does sound a bit contrived, I'll admit. But, the heart of this film is not the acting (yuck!) or the plot (yawn) but the ghosts. Creepy, and well done, the ghosts make this movie watchable. From Charlie Manson's ghost, to the odd and scary duo of a fat dead man and his short equally dead mother, the ghosts can get down-right terrifying. Add into the mix one of the coolest and gruesomest (is that a word?) deaths I have seen in a long time and you have a pretty good horror flick.

I give it: 3 stars
