GASTROINTESTINAL EMERGENCIES


  
This lecture is divided in the following sections:

       Pancreatitis
       Gastrointestinal Bleeding and hemorrhage
        Fulminant hepatic failure
        Crohn Disease
        Ulcerative Colitis
        Carcinoid Syndrome


       We discuss these gastrointestinal emergencies in the critical care setting , by the                  stanpoint of an intensivist Here are soem highlights:


       The use of antienzymes (octreotide and aprotinin for pancreatitis)
      
        The use of predigested enteral formulas to prevent intestinal atrophy
     
         Octreotide VS vasopresin in the treatment of Gastrointestinal bleeding

         Argon plasma coagulation

         The newer 5 ASA Olsalazine , mesalamine  VS salazosulfapyridine

         The use of octreotide in carcinoid syndrome
