Plot:  A captain (George Clooney) of a swordfish fishing boat is in a slump so he takes a risk and goes much deeper into the ocean than he should.  His crew (with Mark Wahlberg and John C. Reilly) catch a lot of fish, but find that all the fish will rot if they don't go back across immediately even though they know a storm is coming.  The storm is worst than they thought, a cross between three storms including a hurricane.  Nonetheless the contest is on between the gigantic storm and the tired crew.  This film is based on a true story that happened in 1991.
Critique:  The Perfect Storm is a heartfelt, exciting, and basically well made film.  Wolfgang Peterson who is a very talented filmmaker (think foreign submarine thriller 1982) works his magic here.  The cast does a solid job all around, and the script though a little limited isn't all that bad.  The music and special effects play a key part in making this film work.  The special effects are especially awesome, I didn't doubt the waves for a second.  You will feel the storm, and that is quite an achievement.
In terms of story telling nothing new is attempted, but the presentation is good enough that it works, and it is worth recommending.  Even if you can't stand the dialogue, which I could, you'll stare in awe at the splashes and huge tides.  The characters are surprisingly developed, all though not flawlessly by any means.  Just like most everything else in this film it works, it isn't great, but it works and so on account of all these things it is a good film.
This film is incredibally anxiety provoking though, so it isn't really a grab a popcorn and leave your brain at the door, but it's more like a grab something light and watch out for your emotions.  It is a very emotional film, and a solid one at that.  One warning though, for an anxiety producing film it may not be quite rewarding enough at the end, though it just barely made the cut for me in that category.
