Plot:  James Spader plays the captain of a vessel on a rescue mission.  He is called in charge after the older captain died during space travel.  He is along with the ride with his crew members including Bassett, Tunney, Phillips, as they attempt to aid a strange man who lies to them constantly.  They find out he has found some sort of alien artifact that he plans to sell and distribute.  He needs the team's help and they of course refuse.  Things go from bad to worse after that as the team unravels secret after secret about the artifact and the abandoned ship where they found it.
Critique: This movie has no doubt an interesting premise.  Although hurt by some mediocre introduction special effects it got my interest.  The acting wasn't perfect, but surprisingly effective.  You'll probably be little drawn back by James Spader as he looks a great deal different then he did back in when he starred in Stargate with Kurt Russel.  The movie comes at you fast and furious with no character intros, which was interesting and took some adapting.  You'll have to adjust especially to the dark, cold, yet intriguing mood.
There is some exciting mystery and fascinating sequences between the characters.  It keeps you guessing even though a few secretes won't be kept as long as the script intends.
The last half an hour of this film was a little cliched and not very sophisticated even though going into a film like this one you don't expect stunningly intelligent writing.  The ending was not very furfilling, and doesn't leave a great taste in one's mouth.
The final revelations are not nearly as fascinating as the premise hints, and our protaganist seems to be a
little too all knowing.
One last complaint, there were some pretty ugly scenes that didn't seem to go anywhere, but excercise the antagonist's power which is no doubt more furious and powerful then our protaganist Spader and we understand that anyway.  All in all not a terrible movie going experience if you have nothing better to see, and need an easy movie on the mind for whatever reason.  But, I have to warn you be prepared for a weak ending that sends this movie from good to fair.
