| Plot: Four old men are asked to try to recover a damaged Russian satelite and repair it in space on account of the dinosaur computer language that Eastwood's character made. Eastwood could have done it with the regular NASA astronauts, but he wanted his old friends to come out in space with him and supposedly he needed their old training. On account of all this Eastwood is accompanied by Sutherland, Jones and Garner. They first have to pass the NASA training and prepare. Afterwards, a surprise lies out in space for them. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Between the all-star cast and the witty and quick script this movie had something to go on. Even though the plot was incredibally unrealistic and sometimes even down right unbelievable we went along with it because of its laughs and the lovable old actors. The story crept along slowly with a few bumps in the road that seemed like hard problems, but we're lead to believe they are fixed easily because of the really cool old guys. Well, they were pretty cool, but it was still a bit silly that elderly men could train for a mission in one month starting from scratch. I know one has to suspend disbelief in any movie and as I said I did that at the beginning, but just becuase things can't happen in real life doesn't mean they can't be properly explained, fixed, or avoided. The general sloppiness of the script made things that were unbelievable a little wrong because of lack of explanation. The focus was instead on the comedy that accompanies getting older and the timing of the one liners. The timing was great, and it kept me smiling for a while, but I still felt empty without any point or a least twists of the plot. Furthermore, when the old guys go out into space things go from ok to a bit bad. The plot holes become a bit larger, and the story is extraordinarily predicatable. The problem with Tommy Lee Jones's character and the aftermath of it are so easy to spot that it is just plain frustrating. The problem that accompanies the Russian satelite is so obvious because of American cinema's focus on this part of Russia that the audience was led to say "well yeah come on we saw that coming, can't you come up with a better, more unique problem". I can't be more specific because I don't want to ruin the ending for those for you who are interested, but I really think the intelligence of the audience wasn't respected. I didn't like that. Thus, I left the theatre feeling incomplete about the film. by supernothingman (E.S.S) contact me at [email protected] |
