| Plot: David Duchovny plays a man who's wife died, and is emotionally paralyzed by it. His wife was trying to help an ape get more room in his cell, and he tries to pursue that dream by using his skills as an architect. His friend (David Alan Grier) is trying to jumpstart his social life, but Duchovny isn't responsive. However, when he goes to an Itallian restaurant (with an Irish name) he meets a down to earth girl (Minnie Driver) who works there, but is actaully trying to be an artist. He eventually falls in love with and her with him. However, she has had heart surgery recently and although that doesn't bother him like it did with her other dates, she fears he will be disturbed when he finds out that Driver's heart was the same heart that belonged to his wife. He is already having trouble letting his wife go a year later, and this could complicate things even more. Her family consists of only her grandfather, and his friends. Together this team finds a way to work things out. |
| Critique: Bonnie Hunt's directorial debut is a sensitive, easy on the mind, predictable little romance. Although I can't say I'd recommend, it isn't really a bad movie. It is average, and I don't recommend average films. It took me a while to get past my reservations of David Duchovny in a romantic role, but he didn't do bad. Minnie Driver was pretty good too, in fact Bonnie Hunt prooved she has a knack with actors, every performer did his her part very well. This let me accept the film, although the script was very, very limited. It had no depth, originality, or much intelligence. However, altogether the film meant well, and with good performances and direction it wasn't a total loss. It's one of those films that although I can't recommend I can tell you if you want to try it out you wouldn't be totally wasting your time, it was a mixed bag and it might work for you, it just didn't quite make it for me. What I don't understand is why studios keep making films like this, every time they wear out their welcome and make an annoying, predictable film that will be forgotten without any trouble soon after. Therefore, although the chemistry between the actors was mildly entertaining, it was a weak production all and all. Return To Me is a leave your brain at the door romance, and if those work for you fine, but I can only give it a lukewarm rating. review by supernothingman questions or comments? email me at [email protected] |
