Plot:  A spaceship crashes on a mysterious island.  Each member of the crew have troubles which they carry on the island.  The biggest challenges at first are to find water and to watch their backs from an escaped prisoner (Vin Diesel) whom a bounty hunter (Cole Hauser) was transporting along with the rest of the civilians.  The captain (Radha Mitchell) has to deal with the stress of trying (unsuccessfully) to abandon the crew to save herself and another.  She now regrets that especially after they all made it out alive- that is to the planet.  They soon find their biggest difficulty will be dealing the abnormal man eating life forms that have picked the barren planet dry of life and now resort to killing themselves.  They still struggle to find peace within the crew as the captain has to neutralize the fighting with the bounty hunter and the criminal.
Critique:  This movie is a stunningly well made sci-fi thriller with intense and intelligent cinematography by David Eggby.  It is riveting from start to finish, with engaging storyline and surprisingly well developed, interesting characters.  David Twohy who made the popular and satisfying The Arrival has stepped up a level in direction to create an artful (really!) science fiction adventure that walks over other other fantasy attempts of the year 2000.
Although its elements are very similar to previous sci-fi movies it is different in its daring and fascinating presentation.  The acting is very surprising, as Radha Mitchell has a very good performance, along with an understated, but fulfilling performance by Cole Hauser.  Vin Diesel doesn't have a difficult job, and is more of plot vehicle than anything else.  Yet he definitely has a potent on screen presence.  He has an interesting part in developing the captain's personality by his interactions with her.
This is quite an entertaining, thrilling edge of your seat movie that will easily keep you guessing for almost 2 hours.  It needs an audience to appreciate its surprisingly authentic dripping sci-fi mood.  The barren lands hold a certain emotional quality that will scare at times, but more than that transport us to a world that is totally strange and morbidly fascinating.
To top it off this films holds wisdom as it chooses to find revelations within our new captain and surrounding victims of the crash.
I have some complaints however.  The characters never sufficiently reflect about the increasing death toll around them.  The film is unconcerned with its violence.  Subsequently, it gains an unnecessary, cartoonish quality.  Also, its storyline could have been expanded.
