| Critique: Nurse Betty is a low key, wise dark comedy. Its plot is quite far from reality, but if you can accept what happens anyway you are in for one unique ride. Renee Zellweger gives one of the best performances of the year, and Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock are pretty good too. Even in this disturbed reality everyone acts very naturalistic. The film is very well made thanks to Neil LaBute, whose excellent direction aids the film immeasurably. Rolfe Kent's score is very uplifting, and aids the upbeat tone. Jean-Yves Escoffier's cinematography is not flashy, but very effective in its use of colors and its ability to catch the actors in their golden moments. Everybody has their hearts in this fabulous fantasy tale, dripping with humanity and depth. Its script is smart, witty, and yet daring and original. It captures life by looking at it in a way we never thought to ourselves. Betty's journey is not an easy one, but it is rewarding even in its moments of darkness. There is always an uplifting side to what LaBute and writers John Richards and James Flamberg are trying to say. There is no right and wrong, and there is no preaching done here. This is the kind of intelligent, unique find that has been so lacking in films of the year 2000. In conclusion, Nurse Betty is one of the best films of the year. It is a volatile, and emotionally heartfelt, if off-beat story. Go see it! by supernothingman |
