| Plot: John Cusack plays a record store owner, with quirky co-workers (like Jack Black). His girlfriend (Iben Hjejle) leaves him and Cusack goes on a mission to discover why he keeps getting his heart broken. He revisits many of his x-lovers to find the answers. There are many sublots like Black's character's solo singing career. Another sublot includes two teenage punks attempting to rob Cusack's music store. Cusack is shocked to find the punks have a very talented band and decides to put their album up for sale in his store, showing us yet again looks don't mean everything. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Critique: This movie was fascinating and very intellectual. Cusack is an expert at playing a normal person, not some fantasy man. His friends and co-workers at his record store delivered hilarious and vastly personal performances as "geeks" on the surface, but in truth deep people. The skater punks who turned out to be talented musicians was a fabulous twist, and effective. As director Stephen Frears probes categories in relationships we get doses of laughter and entertaining satisfaction. Cusack talks to the camera with some of the most singularly witty dialogues I have heard in a long time. It is Jack Black, however who steals this movie. He put a lot of effort into a surprisingly complicated role. He was incrediablly verstatile, angry one moment, passionate another, and often even pensive just like our protaganist. After leaving the theatre it leaves you very furfilled and pleased. Go see it! Supernothingman (ES) email me to respond to the review at [email protected] |
