| Critque: Gladiator shows once more that Ridley Scott is an extremely talented director. Scott takes the audience into the Roman empire where we see him create a mood of glory, anguish and a distinct longing for peace. The ending is effective, as it puts an end to all those things, glory, anguish. Russell Crowe delivers a very strong performance as General Maximus. In fact every actor did well in this movie, especially villian Joaquin Pheonix. Nontheless, the movie worked as a muffled beauty. It had several sensitive scenes where Scott worked wonders, but many scenes were shallow and brutal. This is alright for a piece that describes its time as one of brutality and shallowness, but it stays too long on those spots, leaving the viewer begging to be brought back to the sensitive scenes. Additionally, the screenplay was very limited in its grasp of humanity and the affects of battle, Crowe and Scott and had to bring all affects of battle to the screen by themselves. Lastly, it seemed to focus too much on battle and not enough about all the problems surrounding battle. by Supernothingman (ES) please respond if you like at [email protected] |
