Angels Are Waiting For Me

Thanks to my Beta reader and friend Sue David for all her help and hard work.

Year 2031

He has been gone one month.  It was on a calm and agreeable evening like tonight. We were sitting in the living room talking and laughing about everything. He had suddenly gotten quiet, looked at me, smiling, and said, “I’m a happy man… I had a good life.”   He closed his eyes and slept the most peaceful sleep of all. He went to meet the angels. I suspect that these angels are saying by now, “When will this bunch of rowdy people stop coming to heaven?”

I will explain it.

I met my friend at the Police Academy. You already know that. We are like fire and water. Different, but equal.  Both a pure, natural force. We were young and had plenty of ideas in our heads. Time passed. We achieved many more goals then we actually dreamed of. We suffered, too. We worked like hell, busted more bad guys than all the rest of the police officers in Bay City.   We’re legends here.  Over time, we won decorations and we also won holes in our bodies. We were lonely souls. Still looking for our soul mates. But, then life seemed to be treating us carelessly. Three years after the terrible shooting that almost made me lose my partner, he went to a supermarket and ran into a beautiful woman. Just like in one of those romantic comedies that were so popular at the movies back then, remember?  They were made for one another. Her name was Sarah.  She owned a cozy little cake and pastry shop. What could be more perfect for my friend?  She was in the supermarket, just to buy supplies for her shop, and ended up finding the love of her life.  In months my friend was married. Sarah had a partner in this shop, Amanda. I married her. She was the most lovely and intelligent lady that I ever had the pleasure to meet.  From their marriage, God sent to Sarah and Starsky two blessed children, Kenneth Michael and Helen Rosie. Kenneth is a lieutenant in the Bay City Police Department. He graduated with a degree in Criminology, too. He inherited police skills from the Starsky´s. Soon he will be a captain like me. Oh, yeah, I forgot to say that. Must have been the advanced age. Well, after the shooting, my partner and I still  worked on the force for many years. But there came a time when my partner decided to stay on the force as an instructor of rookies. God, people fought to be in his class. He was the best instructor at the Academy. After some years, he earned his retirement. Me? Well, I made the test to Lieutenant, when Starsky decided to work as an instructor.  Years later, I was a captain. But soon I asked for my retirement, too. As time went by, I lost interest in police matters and my interest for poetry and plants grew significantly. Oh, speaking of that, Helen, my sweet Helen, inherited all the sensitive side of the Starskys. She was the sweetest rose in the middle of the Starsky family. Now, she is a journalist and she writes inspirational poetry. To you who knew my partner, it will not be a surprise this interest in books and writing. Remember how Starsky was always reading something? A magazine, a newspaper…whatever. His curiosity and need to learn things from books is something that Helen has, too.  When I got my retirement and had time to dedicate to my hobbies, she was always by my side. I read to her and she showed me her poems. I gave all my books to her. I know that she will love and care for them as no one else would do.  My dear wife, Amanda, died two years ago and I moved to live with the Starskys. I couldn’t live any other place than this. This was and always will be my home, too. A rowdy house. Full of joy and laughter.

Unfortunately, lovely Sarah died last year, and Helen and Kenny were taking care of us. Starsky was the proudest daddy I have ever known in this world. I have to say that I’m a proud daddy, too.  David is living in Minnesota. He is a businessman.  Funny, it took two Hutchinson generations to see that my father finally had his dream come true. Someone will take care of the family business.  Talking about generations… I had a grandchild, Jason. He’s in college.  He wants to be a doctor. And Starsky has Joseph. He is in a college, too. He wants to be a lawyer. He has the same sense of justice his grandfather had.

Well, I just got home from the doctor’s office.  He told me, with great caution and sensibility, that I need to rest more and all the things that doctors say to old people. He said that my heart is weak. I already knew that.  Actually, I’m really tired.  I’m sure that this angel up there soon will receive another to enter in that rowdy bunch.  My best friend will be there, smiling at me, with his warm arms open to hug me, as he did until the last day of his life. I’m a happy man. I had a good life, too. It’s time for the young Starsky´s and Hutchinson’s to follow their destinies. And now… I will close my eyes and sleep the most peaceful sleep of all. Starsky, Sarah, Amanda, and I will be up there, blessing their lives.

I’m sorry angels…one more to join the rowdy people…
