Sketches
Getting a scanner sure does help! I was asking Russell to do the sketches for Tales but he couldn't seem to meet his own standards. In fact, in the first two dummies of the book, it says there "Sketches by Russell C. Mendoza". On the third dummy and consecutively after that it's "Stories and Sketches by M. Cristina R. B. Gallardo. And Poems by Russell C. Mendoza."  I finally decided to do the sketches myself. Although i consider myself a better writer than a pencil artist, i think the sketches turned out well. So i did all the backpage sketches, did the borders and all the artwork you'd see on the book. I created 14 dummies in all--those i bound myself. There's much I learned in the process of creation. Now i couldn't discount the difficulty in coming up with a real book. I appreciate all the people who put in so much time in publishing. I also do understand the amount of work an artist must undertake to create pictures worth publishing When the scanner came along, I was able to transfer the sketches by waiting a while, but truly it is such a great invention and it simplified much of the work.
This is the reverse picture of the braided roses. My inspiration for this came from Russell's poem which begins with the line: "A poet's heart lies on a braid of roses..." This poem can be found on p. 102. The sketch is an itsy-bitsy filler on p. 101

This is the very first picture I drew for the book. Coincidentally, it belongs to the first story entitled "Her Pearls". It was a little difficult for me to imagine the pouch, but it turned out realistic for something that existed only in my mind. This sketch is a backsketch to the title page of the story and can be found on p.14.

I created a mirror image of this picture to come up with the border design for the title page of the story "Her Smile" found on p.41. Of all the sketches, I think this is my favorite.
This is the last sketch i'll include in the webpage. It is the inverse of the leaf which can be found on p.122 as a punctuation to the story "Her Passion.". I also replicated this leaf to create the border art for all of Russell's poems.
