Chris and Nicholina's Triathlon Page 2 - Electric Boogaloo

On the biking way

A quick dry off

After the swim, we hit the transition area, where we pulled off our wetsuits and put on biking shorts. That is fun, let me tell ya! I'm definitely wearing my tri-suit next time, which you can swim in and then hit the bike right away.

We hit the biking trail, which was out of the park and along Marine Drive roughly to the airport and back. On our way out there were still lots and lots of bikers going back the other way. We were obviously toward the end of the pack, and perhaps looking clearly like newbies, so lots of the other athletes were really nice and giving us encouragement as they were heading back in.

It was raining on us for the first two miles or so, which wasn't so pleasant, but it did stop. And as we were wet anyway, I guess it didn't matter all that much. We also spent quite a bit of time riding side by side, which was not allowed under the race rules because it blocks people from passing, but there weren't that many people coming up and we moved to sinlge file when they did.

Anyway, we made it to the turn around and we actually passed on lady on the way back. Wooooo-hooooo!! That felt pretty special.

On the way out

Off for the walk
So we made it back to the transition area, where there were lots and lots of people all done with the race by that time. Some were packing up and heading home. Makes you wonder if they even bothered training or if this is a typical Saturday morning affair for them! Hee, hee. Anyway, we headed out on the walk, which was really nice. We got to chat on the way, so that was cool.

As I mentioned, we got passed by nearly all the people who were still behind us here. We walked the whole thing and everyone else at least jogged and walked and jogged and walked. There were some neat folks, though - a couple dads with kids, maybe 9 or 10 year olds, and one 73 year old man doing it with his son, who was clearly a seasoned tri-er.

The way back wound us back along the lakefront where the swim had been. Nicholina's daughter spotted us and joined us for part of the way. By the time we made it to the finish line, nearly everyone was in, but there were a few people hanging around the finish line and they applauded for us. :) We did have to go hunt down our finisher medals, though, as the person handing those out had left. (Grrr - the people who need those the MOST are the ones at the end, you know!)
Wooo-hoooo!

Time to celebrate
So, it was a great experience. We both actually really enjoyed it, and we were on cloud 9 for days afterward!! We had to wear short dresses out to dinner that night to show off our numbers, hee, hee! I definitely want to do the full sprint tri next year. It's been a great goal to be working out for.

Oh - and our times! We finished in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 30 seconds. We spent 14:29 on the swim, 58:28 on the bike, and 58:34 on the walk. Right about what I'd figured going in, so that was good. :)
