| Canada is a nation with very Catholic roots. Going all the way back to the foundation of New France Catholic missionaries were at the forefront of the settlement of Canada. The Church has played a pivotal role in the history of Canada throughout her history. The "Quebec Act" which granted religious toleration to the Catholics of Canada was one of the reasons for the American revolt as well as Canada remaining loyal and steadfast. With the settlement of the west, Ukranian Catholics added a Byzantine flavor to the Catholic landscape in Canada. The Church in Canada became so strong and zealous that when the Church was under attack the first Canadian troops to fight overseas were men who volunteered for the Pontifical Zouaves to defend the Pope. Today, times seem hard for Canadian Catholics. Canada is one of the first four nations to legalize gay marriage, abortion is legal and some people are even prosecuted for preaching the opposition of the Church on these issues. However, there are still devoutly faithful Catholics in Canada such as the great Bishop Fred Henry of Calgary, Alberta who stand up to these trends in defense of the faith. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
