| PC and Video Game Iron Storm In this alternate history pc game the Bloody Baron seems to have done alright for himself. He is the primary villain in this alternate reality in which it is 1964 and World War I is still raging. Ignoring the fact that the Baron should have been dead of extreme old age by 1964, in this universe the Baron took over Mongolia during the chaos of Russia falling apart in World War I. He forged a massive army and, it seems, managed to take over Russia and Germany to become the master of his own Eurasian Empire which is still at war with the western democracies. Sadly, the player does not get to play the part of the Baron himself but rather one of the "good guys", namely Lieutenant James Anderson who is sent to infiltrate the German-Mongol lines to destroy key positions and undertake a secret mission that could finally bring the seemingly endless conflict to a close. Roman Ungern von Sternberg The Wikipedia page on the Bloody Baron which of course means one has to take the "facts" they give with more than a bag of salt. The basics are pretty much okay but too much should never be expected from a system of "truth" by committee. 20th Century Genghis Khan Suite101 military history article on the Bloody Baron by Christopher Eger. It is a pretty good summary, though sensationalist like much on the Baron and is based on but a single source. The "Bloody" Baron von Ungern-Sternberg: Madman or Mystic Really just a short introduction to the Baron by Technoccult which at least makes it clear that it is extremely difficult to seperate the fact from the fiction regarding the Baron. The "Bloody" Baron von Ungern-Sternberg: Madman or Mystic The full article mentioned above from the New Age oddballs at New Dawn Magazine. They draw a stunning connection between the Baron and the Nazis (no?! anti-semitism makes one a Nazi?! Who would have ever seen that coming?) but it is a better researched and footnoted article than many others. Baron von Ungern-Sternberg: The Brutal Buddha A well known article by Rhys Hughes that good a pretty good summary of the Baron's exploits. Probably my favorite part is the mention of the memorial procession by the Bogd Khan after the Baron's death which is not often told. Baron Ungern von Sternberg A "video" on YouTube from Germany consisting of text and still photos, most of Genghis khan rather than our dear Baron about this would-be modern reincarnation of the great conquering Mongol. |
