8/22/04: High Voltage - Tempe, AZ

Match #1
Nick Dinsmore vs. Eric Angle

Our first match on High Voltage this week featured the thus far undefeated Eric Angle taking on Nick Dinsmore. Dinsmore, primarily a tag team wrestler in GCW, showed that he has a lot of skills as a singles wrestler as well, taking Angle to the limit. After a lot of back and forth action, it would be Eric Angle left standing, his undefeated streak still in tact, after an Angle Slam.

Eric Angle pinned Nick Dinsmore with the Angle Slam in 0:12:12.
Rating: *** 1/4

Eric Angle keeps getting stronger and stronger with every win he picks up. At this rate, a title shot can't be too far off for the brother of the World Heavyweight champion.

Match #2
"Primetime" Elix Skipper vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles

Elix Skipper and AJ Styles are two men who could both use a win. August has not been a kind month to AJ Styles, as he lost the Television Title to Steve Bradley and came out with the loser's purse at Summer Sizzler as well. Styles is looking to get back on track, and a good place to star would be a win here on High Voltage. Skipper is looking to establish himself since Triple X dissolved, and he knew how much a win over the former Television champion would do for his resume'. These two are two of the future big time stars here in GCW, and they showed that by showcasing some of their talents in this one. In the end though, it would be Styles hitting an impressive inverted DDT out of an Asai moonsault and as a result, Styles gets a W added to his record.

AJ Styles pinned Elix Skipper after an Asai moonsault into an inverted DDT in 0:04:35.
Rating: *** 1/4

An impressive win by AJ Styles, who is looking to get back in the title hunt. It's back to the drawing board for Elix Skipper, who, along with Low-Ki is still looking for a matter of revenge against Christopher Daniels and Sean O'Haire.

Match #3
Cruiserweight Title Match
Paul London (c) vs. Teddy Hart

Paul London made his first title defense exactly one week after winning the Cruiserweight Title, and he had a tough one as he took on Canada's Own Teddy Hart. Excitement is what you think of when you mention either London or Hart, and that's exactly what we got out of these two young lions. Some people may call High Voltage the "B-show," but by watching London and Hart tonight, you wouldn't be able to tell as they gave it their all. London was able to fight off Hart's attempts at the Sharpshooter and when he was able to hit the London Calling, that was all she wrote.

Paul London pinned Teddy Hart with the London Calling in 0:10:43.
Rating: ****
(Paul London retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

Paul London looked impressive in his first title defense. London has been quoted as saying he wants to be a great champion, and this was a tremendous way to start.

Match #4
MAIN EVENT
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs. Randy Orton

Our main event was a big one as we had a rare High Voltage appearance by Randy Orton as he took on Monty Brown, the Alpha Male. Orton was in a particularly foul mood tonight, still fuming over losing the North American Title to Lance Storm. Brown, on the other hand, looks to be on a collision course with Brock Lesnar and would love to get a big win over Orton. Orton's frustrations over no longer being a champion resulted in him being far more aggressive than we're used to, and I think it caught Monty Brown a little off-guard. Once Brown regained his bearings though, he punished Orton with his high impact/no nonsense offense. With a guy as big and as strong as Brown is, he doesn't have to have a deep mindset. A simple move like a clothesline becomes devastating. Randy Orton is crafty though (he is a member of the Sensationals, after all) and despite the odds, he found a way to win. Orton managed to avoid the Pounce from Brown and took him down with a clothesline. It put the Alpha Male down momentarily, but it was long enough for Orton to go up to the top turnbuckle and hit a flying cross body press. Three seconds and a handful of tights later, and Randy Orton was going to the winner's circle.

Randy Orton pinned Monty Brown after a flying cross body press in 0:06:29.
Rating: *** 3/4

It may not have been the cleanest victory, but Randy Orton found a way to pull this one out. Monty Brown was quickly up, but there was nothing he could do but shake his head; he had been defeated.
