I don't know much about this, but I've picked up pieces of one theory that I agree enough with to support. This involves mana, which is, as far as I can tell, magical energy. This exists in certain saturations around the world. In fantasy areas, where all those lovely, mythical creatures exist, it is high. Magic is a common occurance. In the areas where it is low, there is technology which does not come from magic. Apparently there are a few places in which there is a weird amount of this "mana" is, thus allowing guns and, say, unicorns, to exist in the same place.
This isn't how Ayenee is generally played, though. This seems a problem with modern characters more than pre-modern (although I am no doubt looking through a thick fog of bias, so I apologize if this generalization is unfair) ones. The players tend to act like the entire world and world's history completely caters to their character. This is not explainable by logic and, hence, the site.
