The Crew from Smoo

There are a great number of characters in the Akiko series, but five in particular that I think of as the "core characters." Here's a brief introduction:

Akiko is no mere token earthling, she was the narrator of "Akiko on the Planet Smoo" and the first 18 issues of the "Akiko" series. She's a bit more adventurous than your average 4th grader, but it's her level-headedness and common sense that saves the gang on more than one occasion. Though she's the youngest of the crew, she often finds herself playing the motherly disciplinarian between the warring egos of Spuckler and Mr. Beeba.

Spuckler is often thought of as the "Han Solo" character, but if you're going to compare him to Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones is closer to the mark! Always leaping in to play the hero, Spuckler has a curiously poor track record when it comes to fight scenes. His relentless optimism, unwarranted in most cases, puts him at odds with the gang's resident cynic, Mr. Beeba.

Gax was originally envisioned as a rust-bucket robot that would be constantly breaking down, but he's held up pretty darn well so far! Relegated to the position of Spuckler's assistant, Gax refuses to play the servant and seems aware that he's a good bit wiser than his slow-witted master.

Mr. Beeba is without doubt the most irritating character of the whole bunch, but he sure is fun to write! An academic whose abundant knowledge only rarely serves him well, Mr. Beeba is generally the strident voice of caution against Spuckler's impulsive suggestions. He does have a daring streak, though, that surfaces now and then. His tendency to use only the most elaborate and arcane language occasionally makes him completely unintelligible to the other characters.

Poog wins the prize for fan favorite, especially among younger readers. An alien's alien, Poog speaks in a language which only Mr. Beeba can understand, though on rare occasions he imparts information to Akiko by a sort of telepathy. Questions abound about Poog, and I say: "Let them abound!" Mystery is Poog's most important characteristic, and he remains enigmatic even to me. 1
