Once upon a time, in a college dorm room not so different from one that many an American youth hath reside, two amiable freshmen contentedly made their home. They shared a harmonious coexistence- one characterized by respect and understanding, and frequent bouts of immature ludicrousness. These cordial roommates were a bit different than most, as they were prone to a preposterous love of food. They looked forward to any occaison warranting a promise of a morsel of an ingestible delectable with a fervor and frenzy unmatched. They could comsume enormous amounts of food without a second thought, and they prided themselves on their abnormal appetites. Still, they maintained their slim and attractive figures, much to the disdain of those surrounding them. Oh the jealousy they could contrive by consuming large meals everyday, the time between liberally eased with snacks. Hunger was rarely staved away for these ever hungry girls, and food was quite possibly their main objective throughout the day. On one occasion, an occurrence worthy of much distinction epitomized their preposterous love for food. While one roommate was casually snacking on a box of chocolate sweetheart Valentine's candy, the other was quitely studying at her desk, secretly counting the minutes until her next meal. As a careless hand of the first roommate accidentally dropped a singular piece of candy unto the floor, a calamity of great magnitude instantly took place. The perpetrator of the incident let a shriek escape her throat before quickly swooping to the floor to retrieve the fallen candy. The other roommate, who had been sitting serenely in her chair, quickly surveyed the incident and found it to be an unmatched opportunity. She dove to the floor to rescue the sweetheart and a squabble for ownership of the tiny candy ensued. It was reclaimed by its prior owner, and a congenial offereing to share was speedily proposed, and the two roommates were soon satisfied once again. They had a laugh and quickly brushed the incident off as a silly ploy and a testament to their love for food. This is the mood that they outwardly exuded, but surreptitiously, they wonder what the other was really thinking when that solitaire heart dropped to the floor, they wonder about the motives each has, and they wonder, if they were not bound to the rules of societal courtesy, if a greater struggle may have taken place, and to what ends their unrequited love for food would actually take them to. For greed and hunger can motivate the most affable and deferential roommate to great measures. Thus are the questions the incident of the Chocolate Sweetheart will forever leave imprinted on their adolescent minds, and they will be indefinately questioning the real intentions of human nature. |
